Vet question

Hello everyone!

I'm a newbie on here from Suffolk in the UK! Have been thinking about getting a beardie now for over a year and just trying to collect info together at the moment before I go searching for one

Random question about vets n stuff... do beardies need regular vet trips? I know obviously if somethings wrong with them they would, but do they need worming for example like cats and dogs? or anything else? because obviously they don't go outside to meet other animals to pick up diseases...

Also, how easy is it to set up a tank with regards to temps and stuff?

Hey, as far as i know they only need a check up before they go down for drumation or as you say if they seem unwell, as for the lighting it does take a few attemps and a few bulbs to get the temps spot on. When it comes to buying a uvb light i would strongly recommend a Repri-sun 10 make sure you don't get faulsely sold a repti-glo they have been known to cause problems in the past, i know first hand as Leo had a bad few month due to the light.

yes a yearly check up is advised with a reptile vet, it can help rule out underlying health issues, and you can disscuss any probs with them.

As for heat/light, when you know what to get youll be fine, as leo said it takes a few different wattages etc to get the best temps, i also put a dimmer switch on the basking bulb, so i can alter it day to day.

As your in the UK the best bulb to get is the arcadia 12% UVB, avaliable from http://www.livefoods.co.uk. the reptiSUNs are also very good bulbs and are avaliable from the same site. Its always better to get the tank set up first, and moniter temps for a week or so before getting the baby!

Thanks for the replies yeah i'm going to set all my viv and stuff up as soon as I get it and make sure everything's right before getting a beardie, don't wanna kill it!! The temperature and lighting is the only bit worrying me slightly at the moment, but i've been reading up lots so hopefully will be going to buy some stuff soon
