Actually, having a UVB only 4" from your beardie is going to most definitely cause eye issues at least, so that is not recommended. Much safer and better for them to use the Repti-Sun 10.0 fluorescent bulb and have it at a distance of 6 to 8" instead.

Well see that's the problem sometimes(opinion over fact over experiance). Also you could just put a reptisun 5.0, 4 inches from your beardie.
First my opinion is based on fact.I have had my bulbs tested and in this year alone I have had the Megaray,The TRex Active Heat, the TRex Standard Heat and the Solar Glo.Also the statement in regards to heat output on the Megaray is fact and you should know that since there is a thread dedicated to the Megaray. All of these bulbs currently do not hold a candle to the safety you get from the ReptiSUN for the moment. That being said the new TRex Active heat which is not available yet should be back to it's original quality BUT that is going to take some more time since they are working with a new glass manufacturer and this is not opinion but rather data I personally recieved while in communication with Allan Botterman the president of TRex.In regards to the reptisin 5.0 you most certainly should not have it that close to your beardie. It increases the UVC exposure 10 fold and by the way it does not increase UVB output by doing that. That is not how these bulbs work. It is poor advice to give someone and cutting corners is how you end up with issues. That being said I would recommend the reptiSUN 5.0 used at the standard 6-8 inches OVER the reptiGLO 10.0 because it is a better UVB source. The 5.0,10.0 codes are brand speciifc and just because both brands have 10.0 does not mean they both emit the same amount of UVB or dangerous UVC and in fact they dont.If you had actually done some research on the UVB boards then you could easily see the spectrum and output which by the way is scientific data not opnion.

Vicky, with that response, you proved the opinions, facts and experience, summed it up very well.

I think it's wrong for anyone to offer advise and make recommendations when the well being of a beardie is at stake, especially when they don't know all the facts behind what we are all saying about these bulbs.

Joshish, your beardie has been without UVB for 2 years, you really should invest in the best UVB bulb that you can buy and shouldn't cut corners, it's not worth it.

ive already told u if i want a flourecent bulb its gonno be 34 inches away so the heat lamp could still stay there. if thats the case were gonno install a hold on top of her cage to hold the bulb while the heat lamp stays on top of the cage. Or i could use no heat vat all and just use the Flourecent. IF thats the case 34'' is very far away and in my opinion will be rendered almost useless so ive decided to buy a MVB buld but im having trouble finding megaray on petmoutain.com also My parents are concerned buying bulbs online. The truck that delivers it my bump and the bulb might slightly move and break the things inside. Were buying online as a last resort. Were going to search for MVB bulbs around the area please give me a list of MVB bulbs that arent dangerious and that work fine. Thank you for your help and well see how vwell this goes.

Thats the thing I can't recommend an MVB in good faith right now because all of the current bulbs currently on the market are having issues and I understood what you said about the distance which is why I said you could seperately mount a UVB inside the tank at the proper distance required which would not change your heat height. The Megaray is definately going to require an additional heat source as the way it is currently produced it will never heat your basking area sufficently at that distance actually I do not think any of them will without a heat boost from another bulb.Maybe if you can post a pic of the enclosure we can better helo figure out what is best for your enclosure.

Wow, did you not read what he said if he gets a reptisun it will be 34" away, and it will be very hard to mount it inside his tank!

There are several ways they can be mounted in the tank so that certainly IS an option. Another option is using a high basking area to bring him closer to the UVB so that the distance is correct.

Also, Vicky mentioned posting pictures which would help us all visualize what the setup looks like now so that we can make suggestions to help!

pretty sure all but the high output flood megaray's need to be much closer than 34" as well.

either way Vicky is right if you go with a self ballasting MVB you will also need a basking light and probably a dimmer to control the output of the basking light.

i have a relatively new powersun 100w MVB and at 16" height i also need a 75 watt halogen flood lamp mounted next to it turned to about 3/4 on my dimmer to achieve 100F with a probe thermometer, even at a short distance like 12" the 100w powersun does not put off anywhere near enough heat to reach 100F

reptisun 10.0's are easier because you can just mount it on the side of the cage low as they do not run hot and have them 6-8" away from them, another option with tube florecents to achieve higher output at longer distances is to get a fixture with a reflector or make a reflector from polished aluminum, this can nearly double the distance the UVB reaches effectively but it will still never be effective at 34" away, more like 12-14" at MOST before UVB levels are probably not very good for a beardie.

http://www.uvguide.co.uk/

vist this site and take a look at their output measurements of tube and MVB bulbs. it will tell you a lot about how far realistically each can work effectively, keep in mind that beardies need much more UVB that most reptiles as well

A MVB bulb will be 20'' from ground. From her basking tree shell be about 12'' from the bulb. But if i want Flourecent it will be hanging from a pole on top of the heat lamp and will be exactly 34'' away from bottom of cage. Ive already explained thats out of the picture and im curently bugging my mom to buy a MVB bulb online shes very concerned during the trip the bulb will be pushed or harmed from the journey and that shell waste 40$. Ive already asked but no one answered i would post picture but idk how. Please explain to me how to post pictures and i will get to it right away.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
