Hi,

Our beardie we've had for 2 and a half years has never been sick. However, this morning my husband noticed she was pooping while her light was still off (It hadn't come on yet). Her beard is black and there is superworms all over the viv. She ate about 50 superworms yesterday at about 4pm. To me, it looks like she has been throwing up the worms and pooping. Is this an illness that will pass? My husband and I are nervous... plus the vet is not open today!

She may be throwing up - 50 superworms is a LOT of food for an adult beardie to have in one day. From what I have seen, most adults are supposed to be limited to about 50-60 live feeders a week! She probably ate way too much, and superworms are really rich (and high in fat, actually). Maybe someone else has some other thoughts, but I would keep an eye on her and see if she returns to normal. Does she also eat greens? I'm a bit concerned about how many worms you are feeding her.

Hi there....poor beardie, that was just far too many superworms ! Most cases of vomiting don't require a trip to the vet, just give her plenty of fluids and no food for a day or two. She should recover....but superworms are not meant to be fed in large quantities like crickets. A 2 year old beardie's diet should consist of alot of greens like turnip, mustard, collard , danelion, escarole and squash. Superworms can be given about 7-10 per feeding 2 - 3 times a week, as a staple or 1-2X weekly with 10-15 large crickets the other 2X and salads every day. This is a general guideline....adjusting for your own dragon's needs. But your girl should be fine, but only give 10 supers at most at any one feeding.

Yes I agree, my guy stubs when we got him as an older juvenile about 5-6 months the pet store lady didn't exactly know, we fed him about 7 super worms which he ate fine, but the next day he was throwing up, didn't eat all day, gave him a couple baths to keep him hydrated and the next day his eating went back to normal. We figured it was stress from moving plus probably more food than his system was used to. He was in a ten gal tank with no uvb on it (they rotated uvb between all the tanks), on sand, with his brother who was a bit bigger. My guess is his brother was eating almost all the food, so Stubs wasn't used to such a full belly.

Thank you so much for the reply! I was balling my eyes out... :( I won't feed her that many supers anymore. She is a very picky eater and she doesn't really like greens. I've tried them all and she will eat bok choy occasionally and also kale or collards. She is so picky that if I offer her salads, she just won't eat at all. Once a week I go to the petstore and get superworms, and that is usually the only thing she will eat. Does anyone have any suggestions? As of right now, her beard is still black and she looks tired. I should also comment that yesterday she looked amazing... and she ate the superworms really fast. I hope she will be okay. I will try to give her some water... is there anything else I can do to help her get better?!

well you know your beardie better than anyone, so if shes looking stressed and tired it might be better to wait awhile, it is very stressful for them to throw up, just like it is with us.

no problem, I know how scary it is to have your baby throwing up and not knowing what is going on or how to help....I think it is more scary for us then them. :banghead:

You can drip water on her nose to see if she'll drink. Try it for 5-10 seconds, then wait the same amount of time, then try again a few times. Often this will get them to drink even if they are very tired. She should be thirsty.

I just checked on her and she is trying to poop. Her eyes are open and she looks a little better. Hopefully after she poops she will feel better. It looks a little watery, but I will check on her after awhile after she done with her business. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and prayers going up. I feel so stupid for feeding her so many worms... I just thought she was hungry and wanted her eat something rather than nothing (she gives me the evil glare when I offer greens). I will keep everyone posted in case something unexpected comes up... I'm just hoping for a speedy recovery.

Yeah as long as it was just too many worms in one feeding she should be fine. She might not want to eat today but you could always try some baby food, like stage one squash. And you can still feed her super worms but i would stick with around 10 a day, cause she should be eating mostly veggies at this point, but if she won't eat her veggies maybe someone with more experience can give you some tips and tricks to help get her to eat more.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
