HI! I am jings55, but you can call me Joanne. My Grands call me "Mimi." I live in South Carolina, USA. My family and I are are new Beardie owners. I just wrote an article in the RIP section concerning Strykers' namessake, Stryker I, also known as Ms. Stryker, who died exactly a week after we got her. We learned about Beardie ownership the hard way.
However, The very day that Stryker I passed away, Friday, May 11th, 2012, my 9 year old Granddaughter wanted a new one, as "she" was suppose to be her birthday gift. She was upset and heartbroken that "her" Beardie had been sick and died. I called around the local pet stores and surprizingly, one of them reccommended the other as carrying better quality bearded dragons that were also known for their beautiful colors. I found out later that these dragon babies were locally bred by an experienced breeder, whom I've since talked to over the phone.
We went to the pet store and they had only one baby dragon left. Presumedly he was a male. But it might be too early to tell. He was 3 1/2 months old and they told me his birthday was January 27th, 2012. The 40 gallon set-up we had fot the other Beardie might have been contaminated because it was disenfected with bleach. (We were told by two pet stores not to use it for a month.) We bought the new little dragon, with the 10 gallon tank, lights and all that he was living in later that same day. My 9 yr old Granddaughter immediately named him "Stryker", after the one that died. I thought he was rather plain at first. Olive green in color, but the store employee pointed out the orange coloring around his ears as a hint of things to come. He does have a beautiful diamond shaped pattern going down his back, in two rows. And now he has some orange down his back, as well.
I've sinced talked to his breeder and found out the names and what kind of dragons his parents were. His mother is named "Lexis." She is a Sun Fire. His father's name is "Cid" and it gets a little complicated, cause I don't understand all the terms that were used. Anyways, "Cid" is Hyper, Light, Leucistic and is or has an Orange and/or Red phase.
On May 29th, we took him in to the vet because when we woke up that morning, he looked sort of shriveled up, not plump and smooth. I thought immediately that he was dehydrated, even though I had never seen a dehydrated Beardie before. I was right! The Vet told us to soak him everyday for 2 weeks and he gave him an antibiotic and weighed him (19 grams). He also gave him the first of two dewormings. I measured him at home with a tape measure and he was exactly 8 inches long from nose to tail tip!
And he's already had his first real adventure earlier this month: One evening, my 9 year old fell asleep while holding him and when I went in to check on her, he was no where in sight! My other granddaughter came in the room and we carefully looked everywhere for him, using flashlights to see under furniture and stepping carefully. I checked the bedding, drawers, even her bookbag! But no Stryker! I was sick about it. I immagined him getting out under the door and being chased and eaten by a cat! Finally, I just called his name a couple of times and POP! up popped Stryker out of the bookbag! We were all so happy and relieved! Now I put a small lock on his tank, so i can monitor when she has him out. What a clever little dragon he is!
Well, we've had "Stryker the 2nd" for 1 1/2 months now and he truly is a pleasure to behold! He is so inquisative and expressive and friendly! And can he eat!
And you should see him swim! He looks like a little croc! And he's learned to drink water from a dropper! He's just so cute and amazing! He likes to hold on to my hand in the water sometimes and be pulled around his "swimming pool." He loves being held. And he absolutely loves watching the Anoles in the cage next to his with much relish! He just weighed in on 6/24/12 at 30 grams (I bought a scale) and is now 9 inches long! He's a growing boy! He hasn't really had a full shed yet, at least that I've seen.
This little boy has turned out to be "my" little pride and joy! My younger Granddaughter loves holding him, but she doesn't want to help out with his daily care. So I do it and I've taught mt 12 year old Granddaughter to take care of him and the Anoles. But she's a typical pre-teen and would rather be doing other things.
I've told the 9 year old, that I'm Stryker's mother, her sister is his Godmother and she's the wicked Step Mother! Isn't that awful? But we have a good laugh! If she would just help out, I wouldn't say it! Right now, school is out and she'd rather be outside ,on the computer or the TV. I have a feeling he'll end up being all mine eventually anyways! I still have a lot of questions as to the correct lighting and heating and amount of food he should be eating, so I'm glad I found this site and have some other resources. I hope "Stryker the 2nd" "lives long and prospers"! :love5:
