Sounds good. I assume you have removed the coil bulb anyways? You have a Mercury Vapor, which is technically all the UVB she needs. What kind do you have though? Sun Glo, Solar Glo and PowerSun all have the same OR less UVB output than the 10.0's.

You also don't need to get a 10.0 if you have a MVB. But it definitely can't hurt. Just make sure she has some way to get out of all the lights should she want to.

And this is just a possibility. But since you don't have the coil bulb in the typical lamp hood fixtures, you may have gotten lucky because the light is being bounced all over, instead of being concentrated in one spot. As in, maybe IF if was in a fixture, you might have had issues.

Hi there,

We did switch off the UVB, but she seems to be cold without. Would putting another mercury in there help at all? I have considered a CHE, but we stay in a small town and supplies are not that easy to get hold of.

Does anyone else have any opinions on the red "night" light?

No colored lights are good, Black lights are fine for snakes. Imagine if you had to sit and stare at a black, red or whatever color light all day or even try to sleep in it. Its hard on their eyes and if you need heat at night a CHE is the best possible way to go.

I didn't realize the coil UVB bulbs gave off some heat too? If they are anything like the fluorescents they would be giving off very minimal heat. I have never used one though, so not sure.

For the UVB coil bulb slot, I would go to Home Depot and buy a 6-pack of house bulbs. I would try the 40 watts first. It'll add some extra heat to the enclosure and brighten it up too. If it's too hot or too cool, you can always return them and try again. You don't want to make another basking spot out of it, just want it to add some heat in there. And I think the 40 watt would be perfect.

I agree and get a CHE for night time. You could run it during the day too if the enclosure was getting too cold.

That place has $5-7 shipping maximum. So $23-26 total for something that can last 5 years.

We took a 200km round trip today to shop for dragon supplies, and here is the outcome. The red light has been replaced with a CHE. Our tube UVB has been bought and will be fitted tomorrow. We'll monitor the temps during the night and see how it works. The webcam also got delivered today and should be installed over the weekend.

Angie had a hiperactive cricket chase feeding frenzy tonight, topped of with a mealworm dessert... One of these days she won't be a miniature crocodile with spikes anymore!

We also bought her her first harnass, but it doesn't fit yet... Only a few more months and a few hundred crickets...

Mealworms aren't all that great to feed, they have very little to no nutritional value and due to the hard outer shell they can cause impactions risks. Most people will still take the chance but I warn, impaction can happen and it is very dangerous if you notice she is having ANY problems pooping stop feeding, though it would be safer to just stop now but to each his own.

I appreciate your concern about the mealworms. We got Angie from a pet store acout four months ago (when she was around four months old). She was fed only mealworms, the dry granular dragon food and an occasional salad before we got her. When she came to stay with us, we still gave her the dry food, put in some more salad (which she continued to ignore). We also continued with the mealworms, and rhe has not had a day of impaction. In fact, her tummy is as regular as clockwork - she poops once a day. Where we stay crickets are almost impossible to get hold of. We have, on occasion been able to get hold of them, and she did seem to like them. She's also had a silkworm or two, which she loved.

Keep in mind that we live in a farming community where dragons aren't very popular (I think there are three in the whole town). The closest shop with reasonable dragon supplies are approximately 140km away. We have tried ordering over the internet, but getting them here takes so long that you get 3 or 4 live ones in a container of 50.

As for salad, we have discovered that she prefers rocket and basil over any of the veggies we normally get in the supermarket. Most of the stuff you guys give your dragons, our supermarkets have never even heard of!

Wow and I thought for a while that Malta is really tricky...
Africa?! Where in Africa do you live, sounds really nice. Warm and cozy there now I guess, while it is "only" 18 C degrees here..

Superworms ought to be better, more nutritious and easier to digest than mealworms... Cannot get hold of these? Or why not breed some roaches, should be very easily done?

We live in the northen region of South Africa. The closest city to us is about 100 kilometers from us. Our summer daytime temps go from around 20 deg C in the morning to averages of around 37 in the afternoon.

Angie is only 10" at the moment, so superworms aren't a possibility. They're not easy to find here either. I've placed an order with an online company for crickets, but they will only be arriving here on Friday.

She had very slight impaction a few days ago, but has been sorted out quite quickly. We also battle to find a reasonably priced apple sauce for her, but we substituted that with some apple and blackcurrent baby food. We give her a few drops of that together with her worms. As for the veggies everyone on the forum seems to be using, where I am, people don't have the slightest idea what I'm talking about!

I understand that it is very hard for you to get feeders but I just want to let you know that I am willing to bet money on the worms being the cause of the impaction. Maybe there is someone on here who lives near you who could maybe get you in contact with a better provider for feeders or even be a middle man in shipping you some stuff. Its something to think about as impaction can be extremely dangerous and I would hate for something to happen to your beardie.

:? You want me to breed roaches? :?

This is the roach our Jack Russel Terrier (kindly) killed for us last night - after the ants discovered it!

I never once mentioned Roaches, I said you could see if anyone on here would be willing to help make the process of getting feeders to you easier, whether it be crickets or even pheonix/butter/wax whatever. If you feel that you are fine with meal worms go ahead i'm just trying to throw out ideas to see if we can't make this easier on both you and your beardie. There have been so many people on here that for reasons unlike your have just not bothered buying anything different when they could and the beardie paid for it. In your situation I understand that you don't have much of a choice in what you feed but there are nice people on here who might be able to help you out as far as getting you either something besides worms or just helping to get you more crickets that you can stop feeding the worms.

I would love to help you, I would and i would ship you crickets if I could but I myself only have roachs and supers, I stopped buying crickets due to not only expenses but the cricket that my pet store sold, I was extremely paranoid about.

I am just trying to give ideas and it wouldn't hurt to ask around just to see. I just don't want your next post to be in the ER =(.

I think you took that a bit too much to hart. I'm sure that he's doing everything he can or deems needed to insure his beardie is looked after. after all he's on bd.org@!, pretty sure that post was more humerus then anything else :p

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
