The Adventures of Walrus, Hyuna, Harley & Quinn!:December 21

I had scoured the internet for a bearded dragon that perked my interest. I stumbled upon some silkback beardies and thought they were interesting so I contacted a breeder in my area who had posted an ad in some classifieds I was browsing and waited to hear back.
After a while, I finally recieved a phone call from the breeder, who is from A & J dragons, saying that he had sold the silkback dragons that he had posted but that he had one more in a pet store in his area that he could pick up and show me. So, I got in my car and drove to meet him.

When he got there he seemed upset. He told me that the pet shop had not been taking care of his dragons properly and that he had some bad news.

Turns out that the pet store had housed him with another much larger bearded dragon and it had "nipped" the silky. Nipped is definitely an understatement. His little right arm lays to his side totally limp. It's got visible kinks and discoloration in some of his toes. He was very, very dry due to the fact that they had not soaked him or lotioned him the whole time he was there. I posted on the forums about his arm here : viewtopic.php?f=45&t=194141 If you guys have any suggestions on how to care for this, please stop by and give me some input.

The breeder was furious and took all his bearded dragons that he housed at that pet store. He told me that he did not feel right making me spend the amount we had previously agreed on if I liked the little guy, and that he'd give him to me next to nothing, just enough to pay for the gas he used driving there and back to his home. He also gave me his guarantee that if the little guy didn't make it that he'd give me another silky in his place because he felt so bad about the whole thing.

So, now I've got a poor little injured silky. He's already stolen my heart. I've yet to name the little guy. I'm gonna give it a little bit of time before I give him a name. Here's some pics!

This one didn't care. The breeder clearly cares very much for his dragons and was very upset about the whole thing. He told me that he had written them a list of things that the silkbacks needed, none of which were met. I wish I could tell you that it was a multi-million dollar pet store that has already had a million horror stories but it was a small, family owned pet stores too. They were gonna let him die. :[

Very sad,but good thing he went to check on them.
He actually went to check on them because I was interesting in buying this little silkie. The breeder was under the impression that he only had a minor nip on his foot because that's what the pet shop owner had told him. Otherwise, the issue with the pet store would have gone unchecked.
Crazy how the world works, huh?

Also, I'd like to add that I learned his hatch date was May 4th. He's very small for an 5 week old dragon, huh?

He is such a little cutie and I like the name Walrus.
I can only imagine how upset the breeder must be to see his babies treated that way. I give you major props for taking on not only a rescue, but a silkie. Kudos!

Thank you. I was a bit worried taking him on as I just had another bearded dragon pass away recently. He was my first dragon and he was a year old. He had calcium issues when I first got him. I had to bring him into a vet because nothing I was doing seemed to cause any improvement at all. He had to get a shot to boost his calcium levels and from then on he just seemed depressed. Not lethargic, not sicky, just depressed. I had several friends who breed beardies, check out my set up and food and all that and they couldn't find a problem. Poor guy just gave up, I guess.

It broke my heart and I didn't want to watch another rescue die but as soon as I laid eyes on him, I knew I had to take him home. I'm glad I'm seeing visible improvement in just 2 days. It's gotten me hopeful. I still am worried if he's going to have to lose the whole leg or just the toes. The toes are definitely going to drop off any day now. I had part of it break off while I was lotioning him this morning.... Hopefully his leg continues to improve and he puts more and more weight on it.

Just remember, you are giving him the best life he could ever ask for. Even if he doesn't make it, though after watching the video and reading on him, he seems to have the heart and will to make it which is very good, you are giving him a better life than that pet store or any owner could have.

Thank you. Your words mean a lot. I'll try to keep that in mind. I think he's a fighter too! <3

The fact he ate right away is a good sign. Most don't want to eat much the first week.

There was a leopard gecko we "rescued" at Petco. She was in a big tank with a bunch of other bigger leopard geckos and you know Petco, one dish of mealies is supposed to feed all of them. Anyways, there was a crypto scare a week or so back and that is fatal to leos. So I kept reminding myself: I gave her the best home anyone could.

He just ate another 3 crickets so that puts the total for today up to 6. He's gone through almost a whole container of crickets in 3 days. Ha ha.

I'm sorry to hear that. Horror stories like these make me want to own a pet shop and do things right instead of how these places do...

That's exactly how I feel! For the most part the Petco I go to is very quick if anything is reported to them which is good and so far they have kept up with it.

I haven't have any problems with how my local PetSmart cares for their animals either. However, if I see anything arise (I imagine I'll be going often for crickets now... I had a dubia colony to feed to my last dragon but they died off and this guy's been eating crickets his whole life), I will definitely bring it to their attention.

I stopped by PetSmart to pick up crickets on my way home from getting Walrus (which was a 3 hour drive, by the way) and brought him in with me because I didn't want to leave him in his box in the car and the Reptile specialist actually knew about silkies and was very knowledgeable on them. I was pleasantly surprised in that regard.

That's good. There's always a good nut.

The one problem I have is that they have someone who knows only fish taking care of the reptiles and she has no idea what she is doing. I've heard her helping people before and was :banghead:

The best thing you could do is just keep pointing out when you see anything wrong.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
