Bandit is not like the average beardie. For some reason his growth has been severely stunted. His previous vet said that it could have been some sort of genetic issue and he will probably never reach full growth. He was the "runt", but other than his noticeable size difference, he hasn't suffered because of it. I understand that many beardies that are runts and have growth issues tend to be ill, and not live long. However Bandit has always eaten and acted perfectly normal, and his vet gave him a clean bill of health.
A few months ago I noticed a swelling in his right eye. There is no puss or drainage, no discoloration. He can still open and close it like normal and he can still see and focus with the eye. From a side view it seems like there is nothing wrong with it, but when you look at him nose to nose and he has both eyes open you can tell that his right eye is swollen and it bulges out a little farther than the other one. It is as if there is a clear film covering his eye and it is filled with "nothing" or a liquid as clear as water. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it worries me.
Unfortunately, now there are no vets in the area with explicit knowledge on beardies. (the previous vet went out of business) I have taken him to one that does practice on reptiles, however he told me that most of his experience is with animals like snakes and turtles, and he very seldom sees Bearded Dragons... The vet examined him and other than his size, he said that there was nothing wrong. I told him about the eye and my worries, but since he did not see any puss, drainage or discoloration and bandit could see and focus with the eye, the vet did not seem concerned. I had developed my own reasoning and told this to the vet; Bandit is a climber and often climbs to the highest point possible in his cage. He likes to sit and bask in the glow of his light, however, instead of sitting with his eyes closed, he stares directly at the bulb. He is always staring right at the bulb with the same eye... it seems to be his "spot". When I noticed this I moved his climbing things a little further from the light so he wouldn't be so close to it, thinking that staring directly into the light may have damaged his eye in some way. The vet said that it was best and his eye irritation was probably caused by his excessive staring at the bright bulb... he said to wait and see how it played out. I have. I moved his things further from the light two weeks ago, but the swelling hasn't gone down.
I am not inclined to trust the word of this vet, considering his lack of knowledge of Bearded Dragons and was wondering if anyone else has had this same issue, or has spoken with a vet who might know what they are talking about... I appreciate any help or advice you may have.
Thank You!
