Actually the wood chips can hold humidity and can cause respiratory infections and can grow bacteria. Plug wood chips into the search function and you will see they are not good, Sand can cause impaction even in adults. :)

Richard is 2 1/2 (we got him when he was 7 months old) and is in a 40-gallon breeder with tile floor. He has a styrofoam cube covered with burlap as his basking platform, with a cork bark bridge that goes to another platform, 2 driftwood logs, a log hide, his favorite rock, and a plastic plant. He has a ReptiSun 10.0 tube UVB light, a hanging light with (right now) a 75 watt household bulb in it for heat, and the other end has a fluorescent bulb just to brighten it up.

Dubs is in a converted corner aquarium that is 36 per side with a rounded front. He has a repticarpet surface, a big styrofoam cube covered with burlap as a basking spot, several cork bark bridges, half a coconut, and a small dog bed. His favorite thing on earth is his 12" tall concrete yard gnome, which he sleeps on, hugs, climbs, and wraps himself around. He has a SolarGlo 160 MVB (he HATED the ReptiSun tube I got him - freaked out for days, had to take it out) and a 125 watt halogen basking bulb. He's also 2 1/2, although they're not related. We got him as a teeny baby.

They're our first beardies. Probably not our last though . . .

Hi Lindsey,
im currently at an animal college, and our tutors have always taught us "all in moderation", so yes, wood chip could higher the humidity etc etc, but im not spraying water onto his wood chip or letting them get soggy thus they have no water to hold, evaporation and in turn, higher the humidity. i remove poop etc daily and replace surrounding wood chip so that reduces risk of bacteria immensly. problem i find on every single online site is they are convinced pretty much everything will KILL YOUR DRAGON!! yes there are risks involved with everything, but its like saying, never leave your house you might get run over, murdered, catch a disease, get cold and die of hyperthermia so on so forth! so i take everything with common sence. i agree even an adult beard dragon could get impacted with sand, but were talking huge mouthfuls of sand swallowed daily, not just a few grains here and their, if they can pass a pinkie or a locust, or several crickets, im sure a few grains of sand isnt going to harm them that much! if i were to noticed my grown beardy shovvling the stuff in, obviously id change substrate and seek advice as to why my dragon is trying to eat sand ie calcium deficiency??
sorry that turned into a bit of a essay there, but i just get so fed up of everybody being convinced that everything will kill their dragon in an instant!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
