Surface Temps vs. Air Temps

So which are you supposed to measure? I have a temp gun I've been using and have been measuring surface temperatures on various spots in the viv. So do we want air temperatures to be 105F at basking spots, or surface temperatures?

Im pretty sure that you basking temp (surface temp at basking spot) should be between 100-110 degrees, depending on age of your Beardie.
Air temp, i run is 95 degrees, and cool side i run at 75-80.

Up until now, I've been going on the assumption that the surface of the basking spot is what you want to be 100-110. But if that's the case, a thermostat and probe thermometers become much less useful as they only measure air temperature.

I use a digital car thermometer. It has a sticky pad on the probe so i just stuck it on the basking spot. But unfortunatly its very very slow.

The probe thermometers should be alright, if the probe is placed pretty much on the basking area floor, it should read the same, or if not a copuple degrees off the basking area temp.

I have a thermostat controling my 2 75w basking bulbs, and its set to 95.
I get perfect temp with this, the basking spot never gets hotter then 110 as when the air temp hits 35, the lights switch off, and i use an ordinary house hold bulb to maintain some light shining down
