It really just depends on the personality of the reptile itself.
I have 8 leopard geckos, all but one can be handled. My eldest female (approaching 5 years old next month) is the sweetest thing. She comes out and sits with me on the bed as I watch tv/use my laptop.
Now I also have 2 bearded dragons. Nibs, who is my oldest one (1.5yrs), will hang out with you any time. The baby (4-5 months) will bite you if you put your hand near him.
Each animal is going to be different, and it really just depends on what you want. Leopard geckos will require less space, but are usually not as personable as a bearded dragon. Out of my collection, I think my savannah monitor is my favorite. He has such a funny personality, and is fairly nice. He's also under 12" long, and is still a baby. I wouldn't recommend a monitor to anyone not willing to feed rodents, and willing to deal with a generally more aggressive animal (depending). Most are WC/CH as well, so you run the risk of parasites.
