Starting New- Slight MBD?

Hey Guys!

I just recently rescued an adult beardie (between 2 and 3?) from someone who was not taking proper care of him. They had said he had barely been eating for several weeks (my guess was really not at all), and upon looking at the temperature in his tank when picking him up it was sitting mid-high 70's F, and that was the basking area :(

He's now under a proper Reptisun 10 UVB and a 90ish plus F basking area (in a 120 gallon), and within a few hours he's already woken way up and shown improvement. He doesn't appear super underweight and he's not really bony either (miraculously), however he does seem to have a slight wobble/shake when walking around. I'm assuming from not really eating he's become slightly deficient and could be having early MBD signs. My question to you guys is what is the best jump start on working quickly to get that trembling turned around? It's not too severe yet and he's pretty quickly romping around the tank, but I obviously want to stop it in its tracks before it gets any worse. If necessary he can be taken to get some injected, however I figure because his weight is decent and he's still getting around pretty okay we might be able to get some good corrections going at home first.

Side Note- I also wasn't sure what food, if any, would possibly be too much from him coming right around from basically not eating or having any activity? I want to take it slow with him so I don't overwhelm him or cause any further health issues by starting too heavy on a recovery diet, if that makes sense.

Hi there, it sounds like you got the dragon right in the nick of time ! With good lights + calcium dusted feedings he should rally pretty well. You might want to get liquid calcium, a vet could prescribe it or you could get it from one of the mods. , here is her website :

You could also get the dragon out in the sun if weather permits, that's often a big boost of uvb. Feeding can be started off slow, a few medium sized bugs per day and of course offer a good salad of turnip, collards, mustard, dandelion + kale greens. Squash + snap peas are also good choices. Post some pics when you can.

Hello,

Great job in obtaining your new dragon, bless him! I hope he makes a good recovery with
you, he deserves it.
As already suggested, lots of nice, healthy greens & vegetation. I would for starters just be
sure he is well hydrated & as mentioned go easy on the bugs & insects at first until you are
positive his kidneys are working well. That way, they wont be burdened with too much protein
at once.
They respond slowly so take your time & I'm sure his appetite will greatly improve very soon.
Definitely post some pictures for us!

Thanks for the responses! I'll attach some photos here of him after a soaking today, he drank some while in the bath but you can see he still is dehydrated from his skin wrinkles, hopefully with daily soaking that can turn around. The only thing I've been able to really get him to eat since he's been here was some baby food with some calcium dusted on it, any suggestions on helping to amp his appetite? I know with the new heat he'll start to act more normal as the days go on, I'm just worried about him and the twitching. Obviously in order to get that calcium back in to alleviate the twitching I need him to eat!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
