Smart Beardie

My beardie is a one year old female we've named Princess or Duke or Little Girl depending. This is our first beardie and my wife and I were not sure what to expect. There is very little, and often conflicting , data out there. First beardie, first lizard, ignorant owners.

She was about 4 months old when we got her and nearly a year later she's alive and well. She's been to the vet and despite having come from a supposedly reliable breeder, she had worms. Not any more. But since she's been wormed, her personality changed. Before she was shy and passive, now she's outgoing and likes to run around the house. Take your beardie to a vet!

A month ago my wife and I noticed that Princess would run over to her viv and try to climb up the side of the bookshelf next to the viv. We wondered if Princess wanted to get back into her viv, so we built a vine covered ladder that leads up to the viv door. It took less than a month to teach Princess to climb the ladder and go into her viv and she'll do it whether I give her a worm as a reward or not.

That's pretty high caliber thinking.

All good stuff! They are pretty smart and can learn off one another, which is a higher level skill than simple mimicry. My one dragon knows that the way to get me to let him run around is to rush to the front of the cage when I open the double doors. However, he only ever goes to the side I'm on and never to the other, which, if his intention was merely to jump to the floor, would give him the fastest access. He seem to know that I'm the ticket to a gentle trip to the ground, and also that I can facilitate access to different heights. If I put my leg out and he wants either up or down, he'll now not hesitate to use it as a ramp. Now, the question is: who is smarter, me or my beardie given that I've basically turned myself into a portable escalator! :study:

That's great! They definitely aren't "dumb" lizards! It's awesome that you've been able to train her to do that.

The impressive thing, is beardies are social learners too. So if you had another dragon, it would be safe to assume your other dragon would watch her, and learn the behavior too!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
