Size Preference

Simple question.

Which size specifications would a bearded dragon prefer?

3ft x 3ft or 4ft x 2ft?
Wide and deep? or Long and narrow?

I would think they would prefer a wide and deep cage so it seems bigger in there for them but a long and narrow would be more appealing in the house.

4x2 would be easier to keep a temperature gradient in because you could have the basking spot on one side with a bit more distance to the cool side. It's doable with 3'x3' too though. If you can provide 2-3' upwards that would help too as that will allow you to create levels and more basking zones with varied temps and uv exposure.

So it doesn't really matter to the bearded dragon as long as he/she gets the desired temperature gradients?

Speaking of temperature gradients. When it comes to hiding spots, do I want them to be cool or is it good to have them under the basking spot?

I'd say either dimension would be OK but I'd think it's slightly easier to keep a gradient in a longer tank. The 3x3 offers a bit more room but probably not enough to make much difference. As far as hides go, I like to offer a couple of different hides or shade areas both on the warm and the cool side. Again it comes down to offering variety. Some times they may want a warm and cozy spot, others a cool and cozy spot.
