Silkworms worth it?

Hey everyone,

I am really interested in starting to breed silkworms, but is it worth all of the time? I know once I get the colony started I will be set and will never have to buy feeders again. I am sick of crickets, but my dragon does love them. I would love to start a Dubia colony, but I live in Florida and it is nearly impossible to get an order shipped here because they are illegal... I would love to sell these silkworms as well. They seem to be a shortage. Only a few good websites with silkworms honestly. It would be nice to be a top silkworm breeder for peoples dragons. I mean they have so much nutrition in them it is crazy. I believe they are better than roaches. Just not as easy... Thanks everyone!

I say go for it and then send me your email so I can order some from you I personally would if I wasn't already working on my dubia colony. Not sure how easy silkworms are to work with. I know dubias are pretty brain dead to take care of. Throw em in a big tank, slap a heat pad underneath, feed em the same stuff I feed my beardie and keep em dark and bam you got babies all over. If you do do the silkworm colony, be sure to update us as I would be interested in how much work it is and good luck if you do.

I sure will update everyone if I do. I am pretty sure I will do it! I will also try and sell them really cheap. These websites sell them for a lot for only a little. It averages around 50 for $10? $.50 each? That is like Dubia pricing.

Once you get a routine down, silkies aren't too hard. It can be time consuming to separate the sizes and clean the little guys. Make sure you keep everything clean and wash your hands before touching the worms.

I was thinking about doing some kind of monthly payment program or a membership with buying silkworms. This would help me pay for the food each month and be able to make a little profit. Say a customer pays $10 per month, they will get say 50 to 100 silkworms per month, plus 10-15% off of any additional purchases (or free shipping?).
