shredded newspaper or paper towels

Hi all,

Does anyone have shredded paper as "digging" material? As a substrate, I currently use paper towels and a few slate tiles. My boy, Gryffin seems to try to dig at the sheets of paper towel, so I wondered about just giving him some shredded paper to play with.

I"ve been thinking about that too. After her lights go out (on a timer), Zaxxi goes to the same corner every night and digs under the paper towel. I've been thinking about shredding some newspaper (it's safe for my vermacompost worms, so I'm guessing it will be safe for dragons) and then piling it with a cave in that corner. Or maybe some timothy hay - we have some left over from hamsters.

I don't see an issue with using shredded paper, my concern would only be if he would try to eat it so I would keep an eye on him. As for the timothy hay, I would be concerned about Zaxxi getting poked in the eye. The dried grass strands can be unforgiving sometimes! I am constantly getting pricked when I grab a handful to feed the guinea pig. :roll:

A lot of people like to use a mix of play sand and top soil moistened a bit so that it holds its shape for when they dig. It can get kind of messy, but they really seem to enjoy it. You could always give him some time in a separate box and then rinse him off to keep the mess out of his tank.

He may like digging around in fleece scraps too. I know some of them like to burrow into fleece blankets.

Do their nails get caught in the fleece?

Not from what I've seen. A lot of people use fleece to make hammocks for them. It doesn't have loops in it which is the concern with some kinds of carpeting.
