Well as some of you may know, I've had Sakura for about a month now... actually it was 4 weeks exactly on Wednesday.
During this time, I've been trying so hard to bond with her and get her to trust me and although it's been slow going, it's HAS been going so I'm pretty psyched about that.
Meanwhile, I've been reading and researching and whatnot, all along I've been so jealous of all your relationships with your beardies.
I'm doing everything I possibly can to make my baby happy and comfortable and showing her I'd never hurt her and it seemed like the better she "should" feel, the worse she was actually acting.
She seemed to hate me, be terrified of me, and want to be anywhere other than with me. Needless to say, it was a little frustrating.
Ok, so then Wednesday... the "month" mark, 4 weeks of being together with my "sandpaper princess"
I get home from work and go right to her to say hello, low and behold she's shedding again. That makes twice since I've had her...well, I must be doing something right if she's growing like a weed.
Anyway, I'm thinking to myself "alright, well she's gonna be cranky for a few days I suppose.." and I'm going about my business and I notice she's not bolting away from my hand like she does. After I do what I call "the refresh" (changing out her water, greens, any soiled paper towels, cleaning off her basking platform, etc..) I sit down and watch her for a while.
Her "cranky marks" are GONE... her beard and stomach are creamy white!!! This is almost a first for her!! So the more I watch her and talk to her, the more I realize, she is totally checking me out. She's reacting to me, she's curious about me, she seemed pretty secure and not scared.
Well as I said, she was shedding and it was getting to bath time anyway, so I reach my hand in slowly to start the process of gathering her for her bath....and she leaped into my hand!! Ok where is my Sakura and what have you done with her???
Bath time went GREAT, she sat there like a great little girl and she didn't squirm or fuss at all really. I saw some large sections of skin from her back legs come off in the bath and I'm like "job well done!" so I take her out, put her in my hand with a towel to dry her off and I tried wrapping her up a little (hello burrito?) AND SHE LOVED IT!!
I rounded out the night by putting her back in her viv, giving her a little bit to warm back up and then feeding her some PW's. She spent the night on her basking platform watching me, still calm as all get-out with a creamy white belly and neck. She pawed at me from behind the glass a few times and when she did I turned and talked to her a little bit.. and each time I did, I swear she smiled at me..
I'm so frikken happy!!! It's like someone flicked a switch and she finally said.. "ok, you'll make a good slave, I suppose it's time to show you some love.." and her personality turned around completely!!
That was Wednesday ...not a very long time but we're making leaps and bounds here. Last night was even better, she climbed onto my shoulder and chilled out for a while!! OMG, I can't believe it!!
So I suppose the moral of my story is: A.) it finally payed off and I really think she digs me now!!! B.) While shedding, a time when any beardie is SUPPOSED to be pretty cranky, she finally accepted me and has been the sweetest most lovable lil thing...
