Should I get Spike a little companion???

Spike is about 3 months old. My husband and I are working most of the time, and even though we handle him as much as we can when we are home, he is alone most of the day. Do you think is a good idea to get him a little companion? If so, should it be a female or another male? He is a bit territorial, do you think he will be too upset??

Hi.
Please dont get another beardie to put in with your beardie. If you get another beardie, it is best to keep it separate. 2 males will fight, a male and a female, the male would possibly overbreed and stess the female. The only combination that people tend to sometimes have luck with is 2 females, but that is no guarantee.
I have 2 of my beardies that are missing a leg b/c other beardies bit them off when they were babies. One member on here has a beardie with no legs, due to attacks from cagemates. There have been some that have not even been that lucky, and beardies have died.

Reptiles dont get lonley, A cage mate is a potential time bomb. I not sayin bad things will happen, but I will say they are possible. So why gamble.

I will chime in and agree with the above posts. Leave him in his cage alone,he will be fine. I too have a rescue with a stump for a tail due to it being housed with another male.

I have two cages and i useually separate my dragons for a few days to give the female a break but they DO get lonley. She constantly waves at him and always wants back in his cage. Whether you get one or not i do know that you xcan never get 2 males to live togther healthaly. One will always proove his domonace and no one needs that. It can get violent. Wheni first got my little beastie her new companion she was never very active. She sat around and heardly ever moved unless i was feeding her or playing with her my self. Now she's so much healthyer and all i did was get her a ne "freind". His name is Bubba and hedoes have to be separated as i said earlyer every once an a wile so he won't "over breed ger". If your dragons are too young they might not even try to breed yet. If i were you i would get a second bearded dragon but you need 2 places for them to hide, and a larger tank than you would with just 1. Tanks are ez to find on craigs list. Good luck!

aka: waving is a sign of submission. It does NOT mean your beardie is lonely...


do your beardie a favour: don't put in another one in the same tank. It MIGHT work out, but chances are it won't, so why take the risk?

I agree with Doesj!!! There are too many stories about dragons fighting and injuring each other or one dragon kills the other. Even male and female,as Doesj said the arm waving is submission and they need to be kept seperate or one of your dragns could become injured or killed.

I agree I had 2 females together they were the same size, Everything seemed great never seen them lying on each other- or waving- head bobbing- but this site is always right on so I seperated them, and one started eating double what she was. so even though things seemed good it wasn't !!!

I'm happy to hear you seen the difference....that just shows you that there is underlying stress that we can't always see.

Yeah! Poor little LG has a wonderful master Jason that did something that many could not have attempted.

He is a perfect example of why beardies should not be housed together. If it were not for Jason's compassion, his huge heart...genuine love of critters, and bravery...LG wouldn't be with us today.

Thank you guys! I am so glad I posted my question before going to the store to buy one! I love Spike and after reading this he will be my only lizard baby! I don't want anything to happen to him or him doing something to other baby beardies.
