Reptile Island - worst pet store experience ever

Wow... I'm still in shock about a)how terrible these guys treat beardies, and b)how terrible they treat customers.

So ~2-3 weeks ago I went in for crickets, and noticed a sub-adult in with a juvie. I then noticed the damage was already done, and the juvie had a freshly mangled leg and tail. I came back a week later and they were still in the same cage, and a week later the juvie was gone(I'm so sure someone bought it).

So on Sunday, I went in, again for crickets. He had just gotten a clutch of beardies in, and decided that all 20+ can fit in the small cage. Within seconds I saw the dead one on its back, and another on its way out - legs sprawled, face in the dirt, just waiting for it to end. The floor of the cage was littered with feces, on sand of course. I could barely stand to watch, but within the 30 seconds I managed, the biggest of them attacked a smaller one, who could only stand there and tremble and then run away to a corner.

On my way up to the register to talk to them, I passed some turtles. I'm by no means a turtle expert, or even knowledgeable at all, but there was a turtle on his back, barely even moving his legs in a feeble attempt to right himself.

So I make it up to the register, too frightened to look in any more cages. I calmly tell them, "I was just in here to buy crickets, but I'm gonna head over to petsmart, because you guys have dead animals all over the store, and last week I came in and you had a 12 inch beardie in with a 6-7 inch, and he badly mangled him."

One employee seemed concerned, and went to check out the turtle. He looked at me like I was retarded and said, "that thing isn't dead" Like I said, I'm no expert on them, and I didn't find out til I got home and my brother told me they can't breath upside down, so I just moved on to the beardies.

Before I got to the beardie cage near the front, the owner of all 3 reptile island stores yells from the back, "You know what? Hit the f@#$ing road!!!" Apparently this instilled some sort of courage/anger in the other guy and he chimes in, "ya, get the f@#$ outta here," while stepping up to my face.

Now, at this point I was mostly just confused, so I told them not to talk that way to me, and explain why I'm the bad guy for them having dead animals. The owner, continuing in profanity and screaming from the back of the store told me they aren't even his bearded dragons.. At this point I was begging for one of them to hit me so I could call the cops AND animal control, but alas they are all bark. I told him I don't care whose they are, they are in his store, stop acting like a kid and clean up the damn cage. I left and called animal control, who will undoubtedly do nothing about it.

I'm gonna go back this week to check on the dragons, since they didn't technically 86 me yet, but I'm calling on the community to check up on this store. Take pictures(wish I wasn't too angry to think at the time), write reviews on yelp, google, insider pages, etc. I work at a small business and reviews are what keep us in business right now. Also, if conditions are as bad as when I went please call animal control.. While one or two calls may not do much, they gotta do something if a bunch of people call.

This all happened in the Rancho Cucamonga store, but the owner who cussed me out owns all 3.. The other two being in yorba linda and stanton...

Thats crazy. He probably snapped because people have probably been complaining, and instead of fixing things, he just got sick of hearing it. I probably would have gotten myself arrested if they started yelling/swearing at me like that. He'll do it to the wrong person eventually.

That's so messed up. It was very unprofessional of them to verbally attack for no reason. I commend you for speaking up though.

Consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Here's a link to one of the Reptile Island stores: http://www.bbb.org/us/Find-Business-Reviews/name/Reptile+Island/RANCHO+CUCAMONGA-CA/

I don't know how much it may help, but it may at least help spread the word. People who run their business in such a disgusting, unprofessional manner shouldn't be allowed to turn any sort of profit.

But yes, reviews are key. Yahoo, Google, etc. If they had a store in my area, I'd even go so far as to make a few hundred copies of flyers (detailing the awful conditions and terrible customer service) and post them anywhere and everywhere - Especially on Reptile Island's front door every day.

well done you for at least confronting them , its really hard to see animals like that or to see owners who havnt got a clue ither. here in the u.k we have the rspca , i dint even give it a second thought and phoned . i then had all my mates go in over that week and nothing had happened . So i phoned the rspca up again and they ended up shutting the shop down. sounds alot like what you were saying. i wouldnt go in there again because it will only upset you more and phone up whoever deals with the shops and animal cruelty .

I wish that happened to me, I would ****ing brake his neck right then and there!!! I'm just waiting for someone to yell at me like that when it comes to animals. I'm boiling right now just reading this! :angry5: :angry5: :angry5:
Poor animals with ****** like that in their lives!!

I would be calling animal control every single day, and would tell them that I will call every day until they do something and if they wouldn't do nothing I would sue them (animal control (for not doing anything) and that pet shop) for nightmares that they gave me when I saw their animals!
And I would call local newspaper telling them what's happening in the store and I would tell them that animal control won't do anything about it!
At least that store would loose quite some costumers b/c of that.

Being proactive is good and rewarding but there will still be 90% of neglected animals in pet shops like this. It would be great if we could change that, so ppl that own pet shops would care for their animals as they should be cared for. Or even better cut the pet shop animal sale all together.
You are a great person Tanya saving poor animals from ignorant or plain mean people! KUDOS to you :notworthy:

I was going to post about this place. This is the absolute worst reptile store ever! I got a baby beardie from here 3 months ago and the first week I had him he was showing signs of MBD. I got the MBD to stop but he still had problems. I took him into the store and had him checked they said he was fine well he wasn't. Anyways to make a long story short they finally (after taking him in 4 times and them saying he was fine) offered to take him in and try to get him better. One day i call to check on him and they say which one we are watching 3. I couldnt believe it. 2 days later I go into the store to check on him and they said he died and they didn't even know what day. I was so livid. They then offered me a new one for free and I pick out this little baby hypo well they guy made me pay $30 after telling me i could have any replacement for free because it was a speacial breed. I only paid the $30 to save the little guy/girl from that horrible place. I wish they would get shut down

This was at the Stanton store.

thanks firstly for the nice comments hun. xx

i think the pet stores is a big debate , theres good and bad. the one i got shut down last year was horrid. they had some specialist reptiles without the right means to care for them , ( my spelling is really bad so sorry ) camellians (yyemin ) with no misting systems and an exposed heat sorce and no u.v .in a tiny tank . dead snakes and loads of beardies all living in there own filth. among others. the thing is i would love to have my own shop if i had the money , but it feels to me over here that theres not much in permits ect or regular visits from vets to check the facilitys are right. all shops to me should have at least a qualified hepologist , permits regular checks and even like how they do with the good food guide and have a rateing on the shops ( ie stars ) i am very lucky as my pet store is amazing , but i would still change a few things . it seems as though some people are not willing to pay good money for there pets and keep the bad shops in buisness.

i am a great beleaver in if you find a store you can trust to look after your babys if you go on holiday then you dont need to go elsewhere.. :D

Personally, if that ***** started yelling at me, I would tell him that I would gladly leave and come back with a police officer and have him and his employee arrested for physical threats.

Then I would go out of my way and contact every newspaper and TV station in the area that would listen to the story, let them know about the dirty and sick ways they keep their animals and make their marketability a living nightmare. Most TV news stations will look into it and some will even do an undercover story, sending a reporter in with a small camera to document the inhospitable conditions, then they'll come back with a full crew and confront the owner or employees. When a new agency calls the ASPCA, Humane Society, or Animal Control, they tend to listen and will then begin showing up on the property. ALSO....CALL THE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, by keeping the reptiles in such horrid conditions, they are promoting the spread of bacteria and virus sicknesses that Reptiles are carriers of and anyone visiting their store could get sick by just touching a wall or cage door.

Call these:

ASPCA
Humane Society
Health Department
Animal Control

And keep calling them till they end up doing something about it.

Have you read Rocky's story? we called several times and they didnt do anthing because he was a reptile and they dont cover reptiles. He ended up dying because his body shut down from being so neglected.

I read the story.

The reason they don't do anything about it is because they are lazy and don't have a reason to go out there and go out of their normal schedules.

If you get more and more people, including TV and Newspapers reporting horrible stories about the place, ASPCA, Health Department, and Animal control will have no choice but to investigate it. It takes more persistence than just phone calls.

UPDATE:

I just got off the phone with the Orange County Animal Services. They are sending an officers over to the Reptile Island and its 3 locations immediately to investigate them. If anyone in the area can check on on this, that would be great.

See... It takes persistence and calls to the right places.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
