Really runny poop...

Hi all...

This morning when I came over to my beardie tank, I discovered a mess all over the floor of it, couldn't tell if it was vomit or poop. It was really runny, appearing to be mostly water with some half-digested greens and mango in it.

We have 2 housed together, male and female (14 months and 11-ish months old respectively). I'm pretty sure the mess came from the male, who has had a history of runny poo. We've had him looked at by the vet twice in the last year, and each time the vet told us he was ok. His poop tested positive for a slight trace of protozoa (a bacteria) when we took him in about 3 months ago and the vet told us that this was probably not a problem and not to worry about it unless we experienced more problems.

Their diet consists of a mix of collared, mustard, and turnip greens as a staple with added cut fresh fruit about 4 times per week (mango and seedless kiwi primarily). We feed them each about 15 dusted crickets 5 to 6 times per week with the occasional tomato worm or meal worm thrown in. Neither has shown significant feeding problems...

We are currently trying to give them a "winter" light cycle; light comes on at 7am and goes off at 5:30 to 6pm. The temp in their basking spot reads 92.6 right now and rising (it's still early in the day). We have them in a large tank, 18'' x 20" x 48" (forget what gallonage that is) with 2 100 watt bulbs in spot lamps, a ceramic heat emitter, and a strip UV light over them. No undertank heating at the moment. We use a newspaper substrate. They have some stuff to climb on in both the cool and warm ends of the tank and the male spends about half his day crowding up toward top of the basking spot and half relaxing at the cool end. We recently added a mid-sized bathing pool at the cool end since both seem very thirsty on bath day. We give them 5 to 10 minute baths once per week. The male has hated misting since the day we brought him home and still runs from it when we try it with him, so we avoid this practice.

Sorry for the long post! Does anyone have any advice?

Hello,

I highly recommend that you separate them. They are way too young to mate & if they haven't already done so, they will try to mate. Are they related?
I would get a fecal done on him if possible. Coccidia usually causes bouts of diarrhea, but so can heavy loads of worms as well so a fecal is recommended as soon as you can get one done. If he had low levels previously he most likely has elevated levels now. He may be under stress from being housed with another dragon too. Have you seen any problems between them?
Do you mean they are in a tank that is 18 inches by 20 inches x 48 inches? So, 18 inches long, 20 inches wide & 48 inches tall, is this correct?
If so, that really is not large enough for 2 dragons, as they need much more floor space than that to be comfortable.
For now, I would cut the fruit down to 1-2 times per week, as excess fruit can cause diarrhea due to the sugar content. It sounds like they are eating pretty well overall. How often do you use calcium supplementation?

What brand of tube bulb are you using, & how old is it? How close is it to them?

You NEED to get a fecal done. The stress of another dragon in his cage most likely increased the levels. Also, make sure you take in a fecal for the female as well. With them being housed together and runny poop, the most likely share the problem. And you do need to seperate them. They don't need or want a 'buddy" in their space.

Also you mentioned tomato worms. You're not feeding them w/c ones are you? Those can be toxic to dragons. I'm assuming you mean c/b hornworms with are great feeders, but too many along with too much fruit can cause the problems as well.

They aren't related, no. We haven't observed them attempting to mate thankfully and aside from a "bob" and a "charge" from the male about once or twice a day (resulting in no injury) they get along famously... We actually had them housed separately and our female got really stressed and sad... We tried various substrates, lighting, and other factors in her separate tank and it didn't help. She's been her normal perky, orange self since we housed them together 4 months ago! If we do observe unhealthy social or mating behavior though, we will separate.

No sorry, the floor is 20 inches x 48 inches, my fault

I'll look at reducing the fruit, probably a good call! We use calcium on the crickets every time we feed them although I'll admit that we lapse on the Herptivite on their greens alot.

It's a Zoomed Reptisun 10.0 tube, about 6 months old or so... They can be anywhere from 18 inches to 4 inches away from it.

About the tomato worms, yikes! We bought some that came highly reccomended from a breeder at a recent show, but I have no idea which kind they are! My husband informed me this evening that the male actually had a big juicy one last night, and he suspects it led to the "mess"... We'll discontinue those post haste, good info!

If the runny pop happens agin, I'll quarantine him and get the poop looked at... Hers are well-formed as of now thankfully

Thanks for the responses guys!

What do you think the "headbob" and "charge" is? :banghead: That is a MATING ritual!! And you can bet she is under stress with him attempting to do so. One of my females that i tried to mate a month ago, but never saw them do, just laid 23 very fertile eggs. Unless your watching all the time, you can't be sure and if she is under 300 gr she can have issues when it comes time to laying. If she was unhappy in her previous cage, i would continue to investigate the reason but putting her in with the male is not the answer. She MUST act normal because if she doesn't the male will pick up on that. Beardies are extremely territorial and the bigger they get, the more they want "their space". :angry5:

I agree. It could just be relocation stress which is only tempoary in most cases. Even if you haven't seen them attempt to mate doesn't mean that they won't or already have. Your girl is very young and could end up in serious trouble if she becomes pregnant. By keeping them together you're definitely putting the health of both of them in serious jeopardy. I strongly suggest you seperate them ASAP.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
