Let me preface this with both my dragons are on tile..

Bowser came on alfalfa pellets when I bought him. As for them eating it, he might eat one pellet a month, but I doubt it.. I've watched him grab crickets and get a pellet stuck to his tongue.. He very easily spit the pellet out and chewed up the cricket.. Even the ones that he bit in half he'd spit out.

As for the sanitary issues, it sort of turns to hay, but it more absorbs all the liquid in the top layer, and is easily scooped out. The stuff is dirt cheap, you could probably dump the whole cage out once a week and clean it for a few bucks a year.

Like I said, mine are on tile now, just because I think its easiest to be able to wipe up the poop, but I don't really see any issues arising, especially with an adult on rabbit pellets.

When I first gave Dudley his digging box he did eat one pellet, but once he tasted how nasty it was he immediately spit it out and hasn't had any interest in them since.

Since it is alfalfa (Which can safely be fed to a beardie) there isn't much risk of impaction, and it is easily spit out like Tempusfugit mentioned. Since I have it in a very very small part of Dud's enclosure, he never poops in it so I haven't had a mold problem.

I'm not saying that I would use it as a substrate for a whole cage, because I wouldn't. BUT, I do think that this substrate is MUCH safer than any kind of sand can ever hope to be!

The biggest drawback I've noticed is that my rabbit tries to eat Dudley now. :|

If i were you, then i would take everybody's advice! I'm know expert on any of this, but i'm sure you don't want your beardie to get impaction... Just saying :)
BTW i use a tile-like substrate which i picked up from Bunnings for $1 each, they don't stink much and are VERY easy to clean, Charlie loves them!

*Update*..

So far so good very easy to clean up no Mold issues as I clean the enclosures everyday...They seem to love it digging laying in it...they seem happier than before, Room does smell of hay though..But then again its a dedicated room just for them and my spiders......Still observing....so far so good.....

I have thought of something though..being in Cali and all and with this weather being so strange...I think I might have a problem with humidity....Im gonna keep an eye out, I will however not use this substrate again, going back to newspaper.,....But I am using it as sort of a experiment to see what i can get from it......So far its been alot easier to clean, and I can smell poop if I was looking for it so those are the pluses...However this weather might be an issue....Will come back with further thoughts..

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
