We finally figured it out, why Quasi slobbers and bites his tongue! For those of you who don't know Quasi's story, we rescued him last year before Thanksgiving, and he was severely malnourished, small for his age, and was formerly housed with others. He was a doorstop dump at a local petstore, and they gave him to us to see if we could save him.
He has MBD, his mouth is misaligned and top lip pulled back, teeth are missing, hunchback, and when we brought him home he was 12-inches long, and 96 grams.
Now he is just short of 16 inches long, and he's a little over 230 grams. He has always "bit his tongue" which drives us nuts, because he sometimes gets a callous on the tip of his tongue. It's not dehydration, as we spend extra time with him daily to ensure his care. He loves to hunt his own bugs, so we let him. He also is a pretty good eater, he likes his greens and veggies/fruits.
So earlier today, he was biting his tongue again. Hubby & I went to get him out and snuggle. I thought I saw something dark in his throat, and my heart sank -- I wanted to make sure we weren't adding mouth rot or something to his long list of maladies.
So out comes "the stick" to get him to open, and GAWD! There's greens stuck in his throat! Carl grabbed a towel, I grabbed paper towels, and together we got him to open and work them up front where we could retrieve them. (Please be forwarned, if you ever have to do that, I hope you don't have a quick gag reflex, I nearly lost my cookies.)
The slobbering immediately stopped. Of course we have a very ticked off mini dragon at this point, but we think the greens have been sticking in his throat, and it takes him a few hours to get them all worked down his gullet. When he eats his bugs, they don't stick like that (we fed him a couple white baby superworms, and looked with a flashlight when he was done, no remnants).
So to "give him back his food" that we took away (from his mouth), we made a slurry of greens & veggies (we have one of the Bullet Blender thingys) -- he really liked it. But to get a decent quantity to chop properly, we have to make quite a bit of slurry. Anyone know if it will last a few days in the fridge? Or do I need to make fresh slurry each time? Quasi usually eats a FEW times a day...
And Psycho has gone on a hunger strike for the last 3 weeks or so (again), so we are giving him babyfood anyway, so we'll just make the slurry fresh for both of them. There is still quite a bit left over tho, and I hate to pitch it if it'll last a couple days?
