Possible Yellow Fungus?

A week ago I noticed yellowing around Daisy's right leg, I took her to the Serpentarium(local higher end reptile store) they do free general health checks and the employee inspecting her scratched it off with his finger nail and said maybe it was urate or some poo that she walked through. I was relieved. I came home a couple hours later and saw her leg where the the yellow was black/grey and a little red. I thought it was bruised maybe from his nails scraping her scales. I paid attention to it ever since. Daisy was treated for a broken jaw a few weeks ago with a syringe under the skin antibiotic. She was on no probiotics at the time and hasn't been since the vet never brought up probiotics with it.

I called VCA hospital(where the vet was located and prescribed the antibiotics) and he was out of country till today. So it has been a week since and it has not spread but it looks not anywhere near normal. I went to see him today and brought up how I should've been on a probiotic and he told me I was being accusatory towards him and I told him its for the welfare of my pet and i'm not questioning his knowledge (even though I sure am), i explained how I shouldve been prescribed an antibiotic and i brought up bene bac and acidphilus and he told me it shouldn't have mattered because it wasnt and oral antibiotic and didn't even go through the gut. He went to inspect the scale, he pinched, he scratched and some of her scale came off he said it was dead and he's taking a photo to send to UC Davis to an expert( even though he's the vet right? pft)

He kept the scale and I requested a culture examination. He said he would give me a call.

I have another beardie, Casper who is 2 months old and I have been washing my hands every time between handling and i'm keeping handling Daisy low as possible and i'm disinfecting her enclosure today. I am on my way to get betadine and lamasil from my local pharmacy.

here are some pictures of her, just after her visit.

Her appetite is normal, pooping schedule normal(looks clean too, white urate no undigested feeders, solid), she's active as can be, basks properly, crawls to her perch at night to go sleep. She acts perfectly fine and if i never saw this I wouldn't of knew something was wrong. Since it was yellow i'm leaning towards yellow fungus which this vet is ruling out for the majority of his decision. I feel like im the real vet in this situation lol. Her enclosure is going hospital mode today. What do you all think? Please help me. Daisy needs it.

Aw, poor little girl....and so cute ! It's impossible to determine what it is from the picture since it's been cut/scraped away. Did the vet cut that little piece of skin off and leave it like that ? Of course it will likely scab over + heal, but you can help it to heal faster if you put some unpasteurized honey on it [ from a health food store or beekeeper ] , it acts as a natural antibacterial/antibiotic. Hopefully she doesn't have Y.F....post here with your updates. Best wishes for little Daisy !

He peeled it off, it came off. He left it like that its not raw or anything just scaleless

Today she got another 10 minute diluted betadine bath, she was fine. Her tail is going into shed, other than that seems normal. Wound is still the same. Any advice?

Hi cf....have you tried unpasteurized honey yet ? It should promote healing faster, helps skin granulate.

Kind of sounds like you need to find a different vet. I have a great vet in Modesto, I have had him for over a year now and they are really helpful with my beardies and I trust them completely . I took one of my girls last year to UCDavis, never again, they know nothing about beardies there. I wish I could help you more. Being the scales fell off when scraping, it doesn't sound like YF, but glad your checking it out. I went through the whole YF thing last year and had to end up putting my girl down.

Thank you, i might have to check that out. The scales falling off means what exactly, they're dead but if its not YF then what is it do you think, is the yellow fungus able to be rubbed off? Cause when i saw it I thought it may of been poop and the yellow scraped off

Update 5/24/14;

My vet called me back and said a few things, he got off the phone with a exotics vet from UC Davis and told me that it doesn't seem like yellow fungus because the tissue doesn't look infected as he said it goes deeper than just scales. He also said YF is only yellow in chameleons and he said Acediphilus is incorrect. I'm continuing betadine baths and will get some unpast honey and lamasil just in case. I haven't seen it spread any where else on her body.

How quick does it spread exactly on BD?

Please someone i need a reply.

Yellow fungus may spread more slowly on some b.d's than others. Sometimes if caught early + treated it seems to disappear. I'd be happy to hear that the vets don't feel that it's Y.F., whether it shows up as yellow or any other off color [ and there are other types of fungus they can develop ] you can treat it as you are doing [ and the honey ] and there should be improvement. The treatment will help whether it's Y.F. or not, but I don't think it looks like it right now. Putting honey on the open wound may be better than Lamisil, especially since there's no proof that it actually IS fungal.

Okay, i'll do the honey..

If Daisy had an under the skin syringe antibiotic would that effect the gut flora at all negatively? Would the good bacteria stay in there?

I'm not sure, but not likely to be the same as oral antibiotics. But giving a probiotic for a few days can't hurt, and may help a bit in the long run.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
