First time beardie owner, and havent been able to find the answer anywhere!
So I got my beardie from someone else about 2 weeks ago. Sorry for the long post, theres a lot of back story! His previous owner got him around 5 months (according to their vet, who I dont exactly trust. I work for a vet office for cats and dogs, and while my vets know more about reptiles/willing to learn, i know this office isnt, and they have sent lizards for us to see cause they dont want too). Looks like he had a toe amputated and they said he had metabollic bone disease. I dont have his file unfortunately. My vet checked him out and said his limbs are strong (great climber, super fast, no flailing like other beardies ive seen with it). But he is small. Hes around 8 months now, allegedy and seems very small compared to other beardies his age.
His previous owner also did not have a proper set up. He was in a 10 gallon tank, with calcium sand and no basking/uvb light. She kept a single red night light on him all the time. He was only fed crickets every other day, otherwise she gave him pellets (which he didnt eat) some fruit and veg (like lettuce), no calcium or vitamins.
Since I got him, he has a nice 40 gallon (which he looks huge in and gone is the sand), a reptisun 10.0 UVB and a basking spot thats 95-100 degrees. I feed him large crickets once a day, with calcium powder, as im worried about the bone disease. He has fresh greens, some carrots, a little brussel sprout, kale. Ive given him a little canned pumpkin as a treat and some fruits and some baby meal worms as treats.
SO finally my question is, I keep hearing people say their beardies have these big nasty poops. Ive seen video/pictures of very moist looking poops. So far my guy has been pooping at least once a day, but it doesnt smell. If i didnt go looking for it, id have no idea it was there! Its hard, dark, fully formed poops with urate. Im just wondering, is this normal? Like i said, i work in a vets office but they arent reptile experts. I have a doctor whos really willing to learn more, but i thought id ask some folks with hands on experience! Thanks so much!!
