Sometimes you just have to go with what's cheapest, closest, and available when it comes to getting food for your "babies". My husband and I have had a few discussions about either ordering live bugs from the internet or raising our own, but as far as the first option is concerned, getting them to our house before they freeze to death would be tricky, and trying to maintain a breeding colony would involve a whole other level of critter care that I just don't feel ready for, given that we're already maxed out, although my husband is willing, and I've been told by a number of other people that it's pretty easy once you get it going -- and last but not least, it saves money. Maybe someday.
We live in a pleasantly shabby little neighborhood in one of the "low density" housing (relatively speaking) areas of Anchorage -- grocery stores and other city conveniences are nearby, but there are still lots of trees and stuff. To my husband, who grew up in more rural areas, it's a megalopolis, but to me it's a small town, since I spent most of the first 35 years of my life in the Los Angeles area, although nowadays some people are complaining that Anchorage is turning into "North Seattle". We're out of room to grow horizontally with the ocean to the west, mountains to the east, military base to the north, and environmentally sensitive wetlands to the south, so we're seeing more and more high rise apartments and offices.
Taxes are low but prices are high here, but with most of the state's revenue dependent on oil and with the price of oil low, there is talk of raising taxes and adding new ones to keep the state from going bankrupt. There never seems to be enough money...
Sounds like you've got your hands full with the little human(s), let alone bearded dragons and bugs.
