I used to take Evee in when I would pick up insects (she is the one I lost in February). I can't remember when, I think in January, I went in and the company had decided to follow the by-law in regards to all reptiles and not allow any in even on a leash. The person I deal with thinks someone saw me with Evee in my jacket one time when I brought her in and complained :( jerks. She was so sweet.

Poor little Evee :(

I'm actually very unsure what the laws are here, but I believe any leashed pet is allowed, however I bring him in unleashed but do own one. No one has complained that I'm aware of, and all the employees love him

I hope you have taken your business elsewhere ....

Pooing in fake tree - simple solution = remove tree.

lol that would be the simple solution...she loves basking there though. hmmm...I could remove the spiky things...or put up something different.

As for the shop - it wasn't the staffs fault, but management. Unfortunately, where I am there are two chain stores that have live feeders...and the other shop has less variety (and less quality). I have a great rapport with the staff there (with them often telling me things that they wouldn't tell other customers lol). It just sucks that I can't take Charlie in unless she's in her carrier.

As far as I know, we're down to just a few "big box" pet stores (Petco and Petsmart) here in Anchorage too. The only other smaller one that I know of doesn't carry anything that we buy regularly, and most of the rest of the small ones have gone out of business -- the economy here is brutal, and the little "mom and pop" stores (that are sometimes more likely to really care about their animals if they're pet stores) have a heck of a time staying in business through the "booms and busts". Sometimes the big chains move in here, sell stuff really cheap and take a loss and use their Alaskan stores as a tax write off for a few years until they put their smaller competitors out of business, and then "Alaskanize" their prices. :(

But I've been meaning to do some research to see if we have any other options lately -- I haven't yet looked under every rock for beardie food (I mean that in the figurative, not the literal sense  ). Fortunately the big chain pet stores here seem to be pretty good -- so far we haven't experienced anything like some of the horror stories I've heard from others.

Anchorage sounds like here in that sense. I'm just outside Fredericton, NB, Canada (opposite side of the continent, hey!). There's Petsmart & Pet Valu for feeders. PetValu is limited, Petsmart has a few more options and better pricing mostly. There is a Global Pet Foods here, but they don't sell live feeders and I want to avoid freeze dried insects.

There used to be smaller mom and pop type pet shops, but as far as I know, they are all gone. I could travel to Moncton or Saint John (1.5 hours and 1 hour away respectively), but it's pretty much the same situation. Halifax, NS would have more options, but it's too far to drive with a toddler and two teens at home - just not affordable. Different type of location, same issues. And the 'Atlanticize' the prices here too lol - NB has one of the highest (or it is highest, I can't remember) tax rates...so whatever is on self is 15% more at the cash. Good times. That's usually why I shop for stuff on Amazon - cheaper. I've tried to mail order insects, but the shipping costs are at times prohibitive. Sucks not being in an urbanized area, but at the same time, I love living in a low populated area.

Sometimes you just have to go with what's cheapest, closest, and available when it comes to getting food for your "babies". My husband and I have had a few discussions about either ordering live bugs from the internet or raising our own, but as far as the first option is concerned, getting them to our house before they freeze to death would be tricky, and trying to maintain a breeding colony would involve a whole other level of critter care that I just don't feel ready for, given that we're already maxed out, although my husband is willing, and I've been told by a number of other people that it's pretty easy once you get it going -- and last but not least, it saves money. Maybe someday.

We live in a pleasantly shabby little neighborhood in one of the "low density" housing (relatively speaking) areas of Anchorage -- grocery stores and other city conveniences are nearby, but there are still lots of trees and stuff. To my husband, who grew up in more rural areas, it's a megalopolis, but to me it's a small town, since I spent most of the first 35 years of my life in the Los Angeles area, although nowadays some people are complaining that Anchorage is turning into "North Seattle". We're out of room to grow horizontally with the ocean to the west, mountains to the east, military base to the north, and environmentally sensitive wetlands to the south, so we're seeing more and more high rise apartments and offices.

Taxes are low but prices are high here, but with most of the state's revenue dependent on oil and with the price of oil low, there is talk of raising taxes and adding new ones to keep the state from going bankrupt. There never seems to be enough money...

Sounds like you've got your hands full with the little human(s), let alone bearded dragons and bugs.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
