R.I.P. Lil' guy, I'm sorry you didn't make it to the vet with your momma, I really hoped you would. I'm sorry hon, I hope you take solace in the fact that he's not suffering anymore.

So sorry for your loss..
As a help to the rest of us, what causes something like this? I've heard of prolapses, but what is the cause?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure a Beardie will prolapse if they are pushing too hard to poo, probably from previous damage to their tummies. Could be because of substrate(sand/walnut shell/anything loose)/impaction, parasites or bacteria. At least that's what I've been told, sometimes these things just happen.

OP had previously mentioned sand, and it looks like the beardie was running around in sand on the pictures. Sometimes if they eat too much sand or loose substrate, it'll cause impaction, and if they strain too hard, a prolapse can occur. It also can occur with old age, if they accidentally eat something hard and too large for them to pass (my beardie ate a 2 inch carrot accidentally, was meant for the crickets, and I could feel it in its side but it passed it without difficulty thankfully), diarrhea, etc.

I am sorry for the loss of this beardie. I hope the OP gets that other one out of that sand before its too late for him too.

He's actually doing worse. He smells dead and he's very cold. Going to a vet tonight but not until after 10. I don't think he'll make it to then.

I'm really sorry about that. I'll keep him in my thoughts. I know how hard it is to get beardies to a vet and stuff, I'm 15 and well frankly, my parents just don't wanna pay hundreds of bucks for a beardie vet. :(
same here she try to avoid getting him checked up so i keep him as healthly as possibly

Thank you for the kind words.
Hor-Hey was the only beardie I had, the picture with the other one was a sibling from the breeder. Unfortunately, I lost the breeder's information, so I couldn't contact them with questions.
Also, he never ate in the tank with the sand. I have a 'feeder' tank, where he ate crickets, ect.
However...someone mentioned carrots. I had recently tried carrots with him, and chopped them up small. But maybe he ate too many and couldn't pass it. It happened so suddenly that I just don't know what happened. We had an appointment set up, but he didn't make it long enough.

Please keep negative comments to yourself. Although it would've been ideal to get him to the vet as soon as it happened, it wasn't an option at the time. You do not know my life, or the circumstances I deal with on a daily basis, so PLEASE don't point fingers or place blame. Prolapse is a painful way to go, I know. But trust me, I had called everyone, texted everyone, emailed everyone possible to try to get there. My boyfriend works while the vets are open, and by the time he got off work, Hor-Hey was gone.

As for the sand and impaction...it could be a possibility even while he never ate in the sand tank. I will never use sand again, and it is already out of the tank.

No one is having negative comments towards you. We were all concerned about your beardie. I hope, though, that if you get another that you will not place him on sand. Not saying that sand caused THIS one, but sand is BAD!

I'm sorry for your loss as well. It's nice to hear kind words from people who understand, not accusations of 'you should have done this or that'.
Are you planning on getting another?

we have a german giant who is nearlly a yer old, my son got one about the same time we got Pheonix, after seeing what we went through with Pheonix he decided he didn't feel he knew enough to look after her and asked me to have her, it has helped having the baby but will never replace Pheonix.

Although i didnt comment on your thread when the prolapse first happened(i didnt feel like i should because ive never expirienced one) i had been following it and praying for your baby. Guido and I are very sorry for your loss. he sat on the laptop and read about your baby with me whenever i checked it. you can take solace in the fact that im sure your baby knew you did everything in your power to help him, and im sure he was greatful for that. One of Guidos Favorite snacks is carrots and he gets them with his breakfast salad every day. even though he is full grown i chop them up as tiny as i cna without almost cutting myself. but for a while i didnt know that carrots could cause an issue and wasnt as careful. i guess what im trying to say is even the most caring and doting beardie parents dont know absolutely every little tiny thing there is to know about them, and everyone can make a mistake, so i hope you dont beat yourself up about it, if that was even the problem as im sure your baby wouldnt want you to. once again, Were very sorry for your loss, but now you have a little beardie angel to watch over you and a new baby if you choose to get one

MandixLeex--thank you so much. I cried reading your message because understanding is very comforting right now. I know my Hor-Hey knew I did everything I could, because even through he pain, when I held him, he still tried to wiggle and give little kisses. His favorite spot was lying on my chest and falling asleep, and he curled up like he was content. I know he was hurting, but it's the little things that convinced me he understood. I'm not sure when I'll get another beardie, but I will definitely have an angel keeping watch.
I had the original Hor-Hey (before I had my son) and he would chomp on full carrots like it was a cricket. Junior was much much smaller so I chopped them. I fear I didn't chop them enough. That guilt is eating me alive.

Spookle--I'm so sorry for the loss of Phoenix. The good thing is now you know what to look for if something happens to the baby. That's the only thing I can take from this situation. I read that many dragons pull the prolapse back in, but I know next time don't even chance it. I got in contact with a good vet and even made my boyfriend feel bad that my car is broken down. So, God forbid, if this ever happens to me again, I will be able to get them to the vet as soon as it happens. I hope the baby can help heal the wounds of losing Phoenix. He'll never be replaced, but just like I was told, you now have an angel watching over.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
