Hi guys,
I'm a first time Bearded Dragon owner, and reading around this site I realize now I have made a lot of mistakes. I would like to take the time to answer the common compiled list of questions to see if you guys can get me pointed in the right direction on what changes I need to make. My little guy is in good health and I want to do whatever I can to keep him that way! So here we go:
How old is your dragon?
6 1/2 months
How long have you had your dragon?
November 2008 - 5 Months
How long is your dragon?
13 inches from tip of nose to tip of tail
What is the sex of your dragon?
If judging by the shape of the tail, I would say he is without a doubt a Male. But not 100% sure.
What size enclosure do you have your dragon in?
155 Gallon Tank - L 48" X W 24" H X 28"
What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank?
Calci Sand (changing to play sand, I'm VERY scared to use tile because of how he jumps from his branches to attack his food since his enclosure is pretty big its a LONG fall, almost 2 feet.)
Do you use UVB lights?
Yes
If so, Is it a coil, compact, fluorescent tube, or Mercury Vapor bulb?
Fluorescent Tube
What is the brand name and number of your bulb? Wattage (if MVB)?
Reptile Super UV Daylight
How old is your UVB bulb?
Less then 20 days
How close can your dragon get to the UVB?
12 inches
Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage?
Yes, 150watt
What are the basking temps?
95 F
What is the cool side temp?
85 F
Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun?
Compass stick on style but getting a digital from walmart tomorrow!
Where exactly are you taking your basking temps?
I have the stick on thermo at the top of where he would perch on his basking spot.
Do you use a heat rock or heat pad?
Heat rock. Exo Terra that supposedly was made specifically for beardies. But reading around I see this could be B.S.
What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific.
Live crickets. 2-3 dozen a day. We give him silkworms as treats, usually 2 a day. We also give him Flukers freeze dried crickets 3-4 a day as treats when he lets us handle him. He has associated being handled with getting these. I'm really interested to see comments about these because I was unsure when I bought them.
For vegies he gets ONLY fresh green beans, spinach, summer squash, zucchini, cucumber, spaghetti squash, peas, green bell pepper, and not very often but sometimes carrot. I don't like giving him fruits because I'm not really sure which acids he can handle. Hope you guys can help me there! I see apples and apple sauce are a good start.
How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)?
When we wake up in the morning about 7am. When we eat lunch at 11:30-12:30, and when we eat dinner about 5:30-6:30. Each time he gets one dozen crickets plus his treats threw out the day.
Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc?
Yes I use fluckers cricket food, and crystals for water source. (Hope I understand what gutload means)
Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them?
Yes we shake the crickets in a calcium supplement called Dragon Dust by a company called T-Rex.
Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)?
Yes, but sometimes they look very odd like he is not completely digesting what he eats.
Do you bath your dragon? How often?
No I have never put him in the bath tub for fear he would jump or freak out. I see now that I need to start doing this!
Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath?
We spray him every 2 days, and he has a giant water bowl that he loves to swim in.
Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon?
No. Though I have questions about introducing a new dragon after I fix my many potential problems.
Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done?
No but we are calling tomorrow to set this up.
