Picking up my beardie on Saturday *pics*

Hello!

I recently agreed to adopt a 3 year old male beardie. His current mom just doesn't have enough time for him with her growing family. I'm getting him plus a 75 gallon tank set up and bringing him home on Saturday morning. He seems to have been very well cared for aside from being a little skinny from not enough food (she feeds him 7 hissing roaches a week) and an eye thing that happened a couple years ago. I got to hold him and watch him walk around their living room and he's very attentive and active. He has a couple short toes where they were nipped as a baby. As soon as I get him home I'll take some pictures.

I'm so excited. I wanted an adult as my first beardie. I just placed an order at petmountain.com to get him new bulbs (including a Reptisun 10), some vitamins, a digital thermometer and temp gun, and some decor because as of right now he has a rock and a branch and that's it. I went to Home Depot and got some slate tiles to put in there, and ordered some roaches from Sapphire so he will be able to put weight back on.

This site is just awesome. I've spent so much time reading up on beardies for the last few weeks getting ready for my first one. Thank you for being helpful and knowledgeable

His current mom sent me a couple of photos this morning. I am a little concerned over his eye - she had stated that he had an injury to it a couple years ago. I've seen him move around and he seems to be just fine. I'm so excited to get him home and get his viv all set up and done well. Right now his basking light is on the left side with no way for him to get up close to it to get warm. There is a very small UVB light in the middle, but it really seems to not be doing the trick. There is a heating bulb on the left side to help with the temps...It's a mess!

That dragon looks pretty sick.
You will have to make sure you have enough time on your hands to nurse this dragon back to health.

The condition its living in right now, and its eye are very worrysome. Did the owner tell you how it happened?

I just found a really good vet in the area that only does exotics. He has an appointment tomorrow afternoon so he can be looked at it. I knew getting into this that he wasn't in the best of shape, and if I can give him a better life I'm more than willing to do that. Why is it rescues always are more expensive? He's totally worth it though!

Try to see if you can get a fecal test done. You will need to bring a fresh poo sample. And ask the doctor to check if the dragon still has vision in the damaged eye.

OK Iv been on your other thread and now, looking at this one, Im concerned about the other eye too.

Im glad you are willing to put in the time to help this little guy - I rescued a little guy with MBD last summer and, seeing him get healthy has been so rewarding!

Thanks for the ideas for what to ask the vet to check for Brandon. I want to help him - I feel so bad for him. And of course he is a Craigslist rescue. His appointment is tomorrow so I will be sure to update my thread in Health as soon as I find out what the vet says.

Wait, do you have the beardie in your possession right now? Or is the other owner taking him to the vet? Or wait... is tomorrow when your getting the dragon? Lol.

I'm picking him tomorrow morning - his owner sent me the pics this morning. I'll get his set up home, hopefully feed his breakfast and let him chill out a bit, then drive him to the vet. WOOHOO :-/

If he doesnt, ask the vet if you can drop one in when he does! He might give you a little container to put it in rather than you having to keep it in a plastic bag hehe!

I just brought Doyle home. After looking more closely at the setup she had him in I opted to go get a new set up on the way home instead of trying to clean the mess that was his 'home'. She gave him to me for 'free' - meaning I got the one roach he hadn't eaten yesterday, his 3 year old bottom of calcium power without D3, and a ceramic heating bulb and fixture. I've put him in a 40 gallon breeder for now, and I should have a 48x24 set up from a friend by the end of the week. I need to go get him a UVB bulb today - she was using a coil, tilted up so it wasn't even emitting into the viv His vet appointment for his eye is in a few hours and I'll update his thread in Health when I find out more. I'm posting pics there now of his eyes

The car ride home with SUNSHINE!

Noshing on some mealworms - it's all I had on hand from my turtles. He's also eaten a roach and some waxworms. I gave him some salad which looks like he tasted it, but doesn't look like he's eating it yet. Currently he's under his basking light relaxing
