Periodontal Disease Tips ?

I’m currently treating my bearded dragon for periodontal disease, is there anyone here who has dealt with this before ? Do you have an estimate on how long it takes these babies to get over this ?

(She’s at the stage where it’s good I caught her and she can be treated at home rather than a vet.)

I also wish there was more info online about this disease since it is so common, I thought it was mouth rot at first but it turned out it was the disease. I had never even heard of it until I did deep digging to find out. I’m just very glad I found it before it got worse.

She’s still eating and healthy and I’ve been sure to brush her teeth (we’ve gotten into a routine and she allows me too.)

What were the symptoms?

What were the symptoms?
Darkening of gums and teeth with a slight yellow tone starting to develop, but other than that, no symptoms. No lack of appetite, no lethargy, and she doesn’t get bothered when I touch the area. That’s why I looked for answers besides mouth rot.

My vet told me that you can use Denta-Chlor (a diluted chlorhexidine) you can buy at the vet) on a Q-Tip and rub the teeth with that. I have also heard that you can use diluted Betadine (color of weak tea), and do the same thing.

I use chlorhexidine on her teeth already, I’ll try the Betadine as well, thanks !!!

Hello,

How is your dragon doing, is the chlorhexidine helping out? You could also try some raw unpasteurized
honey on his gums if you feel there is mouth rot. It doesn't sound like there is an infection going on right
now. Is he eating normally?
There is another product similiar to the Denta-Chlor called Maxi-guard or something to that extent that is
helpful too.

It’s working pretty well and slowly improving over the past couple of weeks. No change in appetite, still a healthy eater. And no mouth rot ! 🙂

I've had a vet cut out some infected gum tissue to help treat a fairly advanced stomatitis case once. They suggested using MaxiGuard gel (as mentioned above) to help clean the teeth and gums and prevent further infection. It seemed to work pretty well.

Okay awesome !! I will try that if it doesn’t have any significant improvement 😁

Hello,

Glad to hear the mouth issues have gotten a lot better for her. It sounds like her appetite
is good which helps out for her. They do heal up slowly but if you keep at it then usually
they do improve.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
