We've just brought home our bearded dragon, whom I've visited for almost 2 weeks now1 To be honest, I wanted to be sure I'd be able to give him a good home. We've had furry, feather, and fishy family members But, we've never adopted a reptile.
Long story, but we walked in the store and saw this adorable little beardie going up against his tank. He was "sold" the next day, and then I went and visited another for 2 weeks. All the others came and went, then, yesterday, we saw that he lost a piece of his tail . The store tossed in a bunch of new bearded dragons and he must have been clobbered. The others he came with came and went. And when I went in today he ran up to the front of the tank and begged when he heard my voice - I kid you not! He stayed there till we bought him, getting stepped on by the others and not leaving the front!
When we first considered getting him, there was another that he got along with very well. He is gone.
The "tag" at the store states they can be paired with another, or alone (they say the same of other critters that I know for a fact should not be housed alone). I did some research, and I'm getting very conflicting information. I read some posts here where people said not to keep 2 together. I go on youtube and many people have two together. The book in the store said they are "very social" creatures. Yet, others have told me they are solitary creatures.
After seeing he already lost part of his tail, and thinking of the one thread I'd found here earlier in the week, I was reluctant to get two.
We brought him home, and he seems so skittish in his big new tank (he was housed in a tiny 2.5 gallon with 7 other bearded dragons.). We held him for a LONG time today (in the store, on the way home, at home while we set up the tank, and for some time after).
I'd really like to get a lot of input on this. There was another that was a little bigger then he, but very docile in the tank. But, he didn't come from the same brood.
I just really don't want him to be alone. On the other hand I don't want to risk his safety. Please share your stories and knowledge of these critters. Thank you!
