We've just brought home our bearded dragon, whom I've visited for almost 2 weeks now1 To be honest, I wanted to be sure I'd be able to give him a good home. We've had furry, feather, and fishy family members :) But, we've never adopted a reptile.

Long story, but we walked in the store and saw this adorable little beardie going up against his tank. He was "sold" the next day, and then I went and visited another for 2 weeks. All the others came and went, then, yesterday, we saw that he lost a piece of his tail :( . The store tossed in a bunch of new bearded dragons and he must have been clobbered. The others he came with came and went. And when I went in today he ran up to the front of the tank and begged when he heard my voice - I kid you not! He stayed there till we bought him, getting stepped on by the others and not leaving the front!

When we first considered getting him, there was another that he got along with very well. He is gone.

The "tag" at the store states they can be paired with another, or alone (they say the same of other critters that I know for a fact should not be housed alone). I did some research, and I'm getting very conflicting information. I read some posts here where people said not to keep 2 together. I go on youtube and many people have two together. The book in the store said they are "very social" creatures. Yet, others have told me they are solitary creatures.

After seeing he already lost part of his tail, and thinking of the one thread I'd found here earlier in the week, I was reluctant to get two.

We brought him home, and he seems so skittish in his big new tank (he was housed in a tiny 2.5 gallon with 7 other bearded dragons.). We held him for a LONG time today (in the store, on the way home, at home while we set up the tank, and for some time after).

I'd really like to get a lot of input on this. There was another that was a little bigger then he, but very docile in the tank. But, he didn't come from the same brood.

I just really don't want him to be alone. On the other hand I don't want to risk his safety. Please share your stories and knowledge of these critters. Thank you!

They are 'very social' creatures in that they love to hang out with you, sit on your shoulder, and generally interact with humans. With other dragons, not so much. Your new baby will be absolutely fine (and probably much happier) by himself.

that's along the lines of what i was going to say.

the only time i recommend 2 beardies being together is when you want to mate them. and then separate once the deed it done.

i have 2, they each have their own tank, and they are both content being separate. they do love hanging out with us, but always look stressed when they see each other.

I tried housing two clutchmates together when I first kept dragons because the breeder told me that they would be fine. In a relatively short time one of the dragons was clearly growing more quickly than the other and the smaller dragon began displaying behaviour problems because she was being bullied / outcompeted for resources. Once I separated them, both dragons thrived. It is sometimes possible to house two females together (although often even that doesn't work, as in my case), but any other combination is absolutely not recommended. Males are territorial and will eventually fight if kept together, and a male/female combination can result in the female being harassed and overbred. It is safest to keep dragons housed alone. They don't need the company of their own kind, just a good sized enclosure and time out with people on a regular basis.

2.5 gallons 0.o with 7 dragons poor guys.
I was going save money and put a male and female in the same vivarium, then decided it wasn't worth the risk of them fighting/hurting/killing each other. I would feel so bad if one of them got hurt. I have seen tons of people house beardies together though, but would not recommend it.
I also enjoy building anything (vivariums), so I'm going to build another one when she gets a little bigger.

With my 1st beardie I'm glad I only got one first till I got the routine of feeding, cleaning, temperatures ect. I got my female about a year later when I felt I could manage 2 beardies and have enough money.

Thank you all VERY much! We won't be housing him/her (we're not sure yet :) ) with another beardie upon reading your posts and thread Brandon shared. Vampy your words put it very nicely :) Same to Bunnyrut and catalyst :) Your replies are very much appreciated!

I must say that he seems very content - even proud, now. In the shop he was always being stepped on and piled on by the others. I never saw him stand up so regal as he does in his new home!!! We were amazed at the transformation :)

Thank you, al, again!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
