Hello
I have a question for anyone who knows about the behavior of older bearded dragons. Mine just had his 7th birthday in June and recently (as in the past 2 or 3 months) he has been very inactive, hiding under his bridge all day. It wasn't too odd considering he has always been quite a lazy dragon, but he would normally at least sit under his basking lamp and move throughout the tank. I took him out a week ago and he was alert, walking around my room and even ate some mustard greens and super worms, but then he just went right back under his hide and I haven't seen him since. I'm debating whether I should take him out or just leave him there and let him do what he feels? I'm worried that he hasn't eaten in a while, but don't know why he won't come out to eat on his own.
As for his living details: he lives in a 50 gallon tank, his basking side reaches about 90 degrees F directly under his basking lamp and he has a cool side with a bridge type hide. I use the reptisun 10.0 for his UVB and his diet consists of mixed dark greens, occasional fruit +veg, and once or twice a week super worms. His last poop, although a while ago, was normal looking.
Part of me thinks he is just getting old and therefore has less energy, but I want to see if anyone else has experienced this very lazy behavior in older beardies. I also thought it may be impaction.. but right after I took him out to poop, he went right back under his hide.
Thanks for reading and I would love to hear if anyone has any thoughts or has experienced this in older bearded dragons.
