Hi, we've had our new guy for almost 2 months now. It's also for a 9 year old - but I think I'm enjoying it more than anyone else. Our guy was 4 months old when we got him, so he doesn't eat quite as many crickets as a new baby. I hear they could eat 100 a day? Yikes... Mine eats about 20 a day or less. I think the only thing that smells with our beardie is the crickets. But that's handlable if you keep up on cleaning them out. My beardie also never poops in his viv. He's only done it once, and he didn't seem to like that at all. We give him a short bath every day, and that's where he does his "thing". It's quite easy to clean up! When we got ours (from a previous owner), he was on a bark type of substrate that seemed a bit damp, and smelly. The previous owners also dumped his crickets in the tank with him, and they would die, smell, and the live ones cherped all night! Now he's on a non-adhesive flooring and fed in another small aquarium. He's a very happy guy. Good luck with your new addition. I would highly recommend it. I studied this website constantly when I got Kracken... you'll learn so much from the people here!! :blob8:

We went out and pulled the trigger on a two month or so old Beard. My daughter named him Geronimo. He is exploring his new digs. I bought a 40gallon setup. Got a 150watt lamp with a dimmer so I could a just the brightness and had some nice thick kinda petrified limbs I have been saving from an old grapefruit tree. Also got a tube uvb 10 as recommended. Got the temp gauges set up on opposite ends. Got a low water dish. Bought some artificial plants for decoration and broke up some mexican tile cleaned off the rough edges an stacked them so he could climb and hide. It looks pretty nice.

He has been moving around the branches and is pretty active but when I added crickets he didn't eat any he was more interested in keeping his eyes on me. Now he is basking and every now and again opens his mouth. I added some bell peppers and blueberries. Tomorrow I am going to get better salad ingredients.

I mysted him and the artificial plant and he licked at them a little. Typically how long until he is comfortable enough in the new environment to eat? Also do you all recommend I remove him and move him elsewhere to eat?

your beardie will eat when he is ready sometimes takes a week or abit but you could always try to hand feed him some greens so that he gets to know you. They are getting used to the new viv. The gaping of the mouth is him regulating body temp. Thats normal just make sure that his temps are all right.
My guys took about a week or so to get used to stuff and new things around the house.
Even now my male hates to eat crickets he is though 1.5 years old and loves superworms eats almost 15 every couple days. My female who will be a year old next month eats crixs and she will eat superworms basically she is not picky eatter.

Good luck and hope to see some pics of yours soon

Cool. He took a few chomps at the green pepper and blueberry mix. Also he jumped a good 4 to 5 inches from a branch to his trees. It was awesome. He seems to really love his new home. I have one side with the uvb at 80 and the opposite end at between 100 to 102. Humidity is at 37 in the middle of the tank. He hangs out and basis then jets over to the other end every now and again. Seems to really like it under the basking lamp. Sits up really tall.

I have also caught him doing a slow waiving motion with his arms. I am really enjoying him. K ids and wife are asleep and I'm sitting here smiling all by myself like a kid. Also I moved some things around earlier and he is very comfortable being held. He climbed right up my arm at one point. My wife even held him for a few minutes. She is coming around already.

PS - how do I add pics? Did some searching but can't seem to find it...

We basically potty trained our beardie....We give her a bath daily, and she always does her poop in there. This weekend she missed her bath two days in a row, and did what she has done before when this happens: she poops in her water bowl. I guess she is used to pooping in water. She never smells, if I could afford another cage and the cost of the bugs, I would love another BD.

awww thats great I just had to put mine in their blankets they have baby blankets that they sleep with at night. There lights are on timers so they go on at 8am and off 8pm so once its lights out I make sure I pop their baby blankets on to shade their eyes from the tv as they are in the living room.
I do hold them each wrapped burrito style and they usually have a sleep while we watch tv, each gets time with mom.lol

My viv's are set up where the uvb tube runs the full length of the viv and then my basking heat is at one end thats where they mostly sit they love the hammocks I made them . Their temps since they are now adult range 98-96c and the cool side is between 80-75. My male usually basks after he eats then he goes to the cool side hides in his tiki hut sleeps for a while then when the sun comes out I usually take them each outside on harnesses and let them bask on my shoulder or climb down my leg and get the sun for 30 mins.

also bathing is important as well they wont like it at first but make sure the water is warm and fill the container you are using to shoulder of your beardie they will absorb water through skin and vent sometimes they will take a drink. after the soak make sure you dry them off wrap in a towel and then put him on a basking spot to dry completely amd warm up more.

Woo you got a beardie, it will take him a little while to settle in and each beardie is different when getting used to you, some will get used to you very quickly where as others may take a little longer. From what you said about him climbing up your arm I think he's going to be a quick'un, and glad your wifes getting used to him already. His home sounds nice and he sounds like he's loving it. Personally I would feed him outside of him Viv, if you put crickets in there and he doesn't eat them they will just find somewhere to live in the Viv and hide, and then they'll come out at night and drive you insane with the chirping and they'll also nibble on your beardie when they get hungry. You can either get a little container to feed him in or do what I do and just lift him out, put him on the floor somewhere safe, I use my hallway, and then one by one (although sometimes a lot will come out and i'll panic) i just tip them out their container and dust them. Enjoy your beardie

Their poop really stinks. I've owned snakes and leopard geckos, but Beardie poop takes the cake on smelly. If you keep the cage clean, however, there isn't any smell at all. Conveniently, mine are "poddy-trained." I take the adults out every other day to poop in the tub, and the baby poops every morning in the sink.

What amazes me is the SIZE of the poop, lol! I always think, "How does all that fit inside of you?" Well, at least I know her plumbing is flowing well.

But people are right...my dragon herself has no odor.

my beardies dont smell either its the poop but like the other posters the are poddy-trained in the tub. If they do go in the viv easy to clean some lysol wipes a glove and all clean and smelling fresh and clean lol.

Beardie poop smells no doubt about it, but its managable .

Phoebe is so right on the feeding thing. Your kids would absolutely love doing the "loose cricket hunt" as we call it. We go into the bathroom, close the door, and let the beardie "hunt" one cricket at a time. This way you can count how many he eats, and the kids seem to think this is enormous fun! It gives ours some exercise too - he runs for them. Have fun!

Currently they are on my desktop and picassa account. Can I link to them from picassa?

He still hasn't eaten yet. He munched on a green pepper. He also attacked a cricket but missed then got distracted and focused on us. He is Very alert oh and he pooped I scooped it out and changed the napkin it landed on.

I Myst him twice a day so far and he licks the water off his face. Want to make sure he gets h2o in him.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
