my uvb light stopped working a day or two ago, went around to all the local pet shops and all they have is reptiglo5/10 and reptisun 5. im thinking of getting a reptisun 10 from ebay but that will take 6-10 days from when i order it...

will my bd be ok till then? ive been putting my bd in direct sunlight as much as possible hoping that will compensate a bit.

Reptisun 10.0 is one of the best florescent (sp?) bulbs on the market. You're bearded dragon shouldbe fine for the few days with out the UV. Just make sure to take em outside for full sun while the bulb is being shipped. I like to order my repti-suns from petmountain.com shipping is faster then 6-10 days and they are a good company.

UVB rays come through the cloud cover, so even on cloudy days with no visable sunshine the uvb rays are still emitting. Your dragon should be fine for several days while you wait for your new bulb, even if you didn't take him outside. However, going outside will be beneficial for him even after you get your new uvb as manmade lights cannot ever replicate totally what the sun gives us and our dragons. We take Spike outside all the time, he loves to bask in the natural sunshine and soak up the natural uvb rays.

Eric,
When you take your BD outside, how long do you usually keep him out? Do you make sure there is shade nearby or are they ok in the sun for a while?

Spike likes to sit on a rock in our front yard. He can sit directly in the sun or move into the shade. Usually I take him out there when the shade from our tree comes near the rock so I can sit in the shade on the lawn and Spike can sit on the rock. I put a homemade string leash on him, about 7 feet long, and usually he sits there on his rock for 10-15 minutes just basking before he starts to explore a bit. After he is done basking and exploring, I pick him up and he either sits on my lap or shoulder or we go in the house depending on whether or not I want to sit out there anylonger. I often have my 11 year old son take Spike outside too. I was going to build him a screen viv so he could sit outside in the sun longer without direct supervision, but never got around to it. Maybe that will be my late fall project once it starts raining here, then we will have it ready for next spring.

Sorry, I am an ignorant American who doesn't know the metric system  That said your dragon should be able to get at least 6 to 8 inches from the light source. You can accomplish that by building up rocks or bricks so he can climb high enough or putting in a branch he can climb so he can get 6-8 inches from the light source.

Hope that helps,

Eric

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
