First off, one of my fat-tail gecko eggs finally hatched after being incubated for almost 60 days (half of which were spent on top of my computer).
Secondly, I've [re-]acquired another beardie. He has a bit of a story that goes along with him, so I'll go ahead and bore y'all with the details.
Back when I got Leto and Ghanima, a [not-so-close] friend of mine was also itching for a beardie. Now, this guy bought a leopard gecko a couple years ago, and it was reasonably clear that he didn't quite know how to take care of her properly (calci-sand substrate, only fed her once a week, etc.). Well, I made sure to school him on proper beardie care, especially since they take a lot more work than a leo does, and it was clear he wasn't doing all that wonderful of a job with the gecko. He hadn't even given her a name.
Well, I was originally going to give Leto to my friend and keep Ghani, but I fell in love with both of them. Also, the good friend I got Leto & Ghanima from always makes sure any reptiles she sells/gives away go to people who will take care of them. It didn't feel right giving this guy one of her babies when I wasn't certain he would take good care of them.
So I cheated and found a local breeder and bought one of his seven-week-old males. I didn't tell my friend this (the one who wanted the beardie); I figured it was worth a little extra money to keep Leto and Ghanima. I knew I was possibly dooming this poor other beardie, and I felt terrible about it. But...I had already said I'd give him a beardie, and I wasn't going to go back on my word. (Actually, I traded the beardie for the leopard gecko, who would've been posted on Craigslist otherwise. She since passed away [my fault, sadly], but she was a wonderful gecko who loved to be held, despite that my friend had said otherwise.) Plus, I hoped that with all my coaching on proper beardie care (and that he seemed so excited about having a beardie), he'd take decent care of him.
Well, I guess "decent" kind of happened.
Recently, he let me know that he doesn't really have room for the beardie anymore (named "dragon"), and he doesn't think he can continue caring for him. I offered to take the beardie off his hands (again, he would've gone to Craigslist otherwise), and I picked him up yesterday. Poor creature was still in a 10-gallon tank, and I highly doubt his fluorescent UV light had ever been replaced. Granted, he'd removed the calci-sand and put reptile carpet in there...but there were crickets everywhere, and it smelled like it hadn't been cleaned out in a while. My friend also said the beardie wouldn't let him be picked up, and he bearded and sometimes tried to attack him. While he's flighty from not being handled much, he's pretty normal. The little guy let me hold him quite a while tonight, and he even almost fell asleep on me! He probably has early stages of MBD, and he's tiny for his age (85 grams at 11 months old), but he's a feisty little cutie who loves his veggies and chases crickets around with gusto.
When I bought him back in May (waving):
Taken tonight:
I recall the breeder showing me at least one of his parents, and she was yellow. Not quite Citrus--more of a dirty Citrus, if anything. I'm guessing his father was reddish, with the red stripes and orange back legs. I hope the yellow comes in more as he gets older.
He's fat, happy, and sleeping right now. I've put him in a large, plastic tub for now. Once the weather is consistently warmer, he'll go outside on my balcony into a 2 ft x 2 ft x 3 ft cage I've borrowed from a friend. He'll probably feel lost after being stuck in a 10-gallon for almost a year!
Oh, and in keeping with the Dune theme, I've named him Stilgar. And yes, the outdoor cage will be known as Sietch Tabr.
