Hello Everyone! I'm Tari! This is Yavie:
290362748_l.jpg

She's been with me for 3 years, 6 months this month. I got her from a breeder for $5 when she was a hatchling as a charity thing. The breeder was new to breeding, but had some beautiful dragons, but being new they got a few babies with missing limbs, and they decided to sell these for $5 to raise money for the Girl Scouts of America. Yavie's got all four legs, but no tail. I'm not 100% sure how this happened, nip and infection or what not but she's fine despite. I'm pretty sure she isn't much older than 3 years 7 or 8 months because she was barely 4 inches from head to nub when I got her.

I'm 20, working towards a degree in Wildlife Science and hope to move on to Zoology after that. I want to work in a Zoo as a keeper and educator on reptiles. I love to learn new things about animals, If I could I'd have a dozen Beardies so I could better study their behavior. I'd like to eventually acquire some more reptiles but for now money stops me from doing that. I also like to go to Zoos for no reason other than to stare at the animals and Photograph them. I am an active member of Reptile Rooms, but with the technical problems going on there I wanted to find a new active place to share my knowledge, and to acquire some more of my own. I fully plan on staying active on both forums once Reptile Rooms is up and running again.

Welcome, I'm new to this site also.
Yavie looks like she is a big girl despite her tail
being gone. Very pretty color!

I'm Cathy and We (my son) and I have three Beardies.

This has a lot of nice people who are always willing to
be helpful.

Nice to meet you! I have a baby BD. (I don't have pics yet) My first baby, but not my first beardie. I wanted to be a zoologist also, but life took a different but cool turn. I did manage to be an educator for a short while at a zoo where we used to live. I LOVED IT!! The reptiles were always my favorite. So I will live vicariuosly through you!

My husband and I have made a plan to save and eventually build a room in our basement just for reptiles, so I can have as many as I would like, over time, and it will be allll mine :blob5: :blob5: :blob8: But like you said, its a money thing, these guys need expensive stuff, so I'd rather take it slow and do it well.

Congrats on your studies and goals.. That's really awesome. It'll be nice to 'see' you here :D

Thank you guys(or girls lol)

I'd love to be a rescuer like that, but money, do you know it costs about $2,000 US to feed 24 baby beardies for 6 weeks! I give a lot of credit to breeders and rescuers because I don't have cash like that. :-(

Hey, I saw one of your posts in another topic and came here to say welcome to another person from Syracuse, NY!

OMG another reptile keeper in Syracuse! I was beginning to think I was the only one! Which Veterinarian do you go to? I have found one but haven't checked him out yet.

I usually go to Animal Ark in Baldwinsville, the vet there is Dr. Spindel, he knows what he's doing and is very good (the office keeps two beardies there that they adopted as well, so it's fun to go and see them). He has another office in Constantia, but I've never been to that one. In addition, if you go to the 2007-2008 phone book, they have a coupon: the first vet checkup visit is free (I used it for Merlin's first visit). It doesn't include fecal exams, just the first checkup, but it's still a nice way to get your beardie looked at and meet the vet, decide if you like him or not. If you do decide to try Spindel, make an appoitment well in advance, it usually takes me a few weeks to a month to get mine in there since he's so busy. I think last time I was there, I paid $160 for two exams and two fecals, then an additional $100 for meds for Merlin (she had pinworms and coccadia). I go to him for my regular vet visits, but if I have an emergency visit I try to get my reptiles in somewhere else since it could cost a small fortune to get in there without an appointment.

I know on herp vet connection, it lists other vets but the one in East Syracuse no longer takes reptiles and Beaver Lake Animal Hospital doesn't either. But, there's a place in the valley off of Salina Street that does reptiles (Town and Country Animal Hospital), they're decent and reasonably priced for a checkup. I took Everest there about 2 weeks ago for an emergency visit and it only cost me $30. I made the appointment at 8AM and was in there by 11AM same day, and they scheduled it around my time so that made it really nice with work and everything. I don't know the vet's name, but I know he has snakes at home and offered me one of his babies (but I don't have room for one)

Ha, I was going to check out the one in East Syracuse tomorrow *Sigh* So the Valley... that area by OCC? I go to OCC but don't remember seeing a veterinarian there. *thinks* I'll have to check that out. Yavie's been in good health and hasn't had a vet visit since she was barely a few months old. *knocks on wood* I'd like to have someone give her a once over just to say she's good.

But then again i also need a job, which is almost impossible to find around here... I've done close to 30 applications and had 2 interviews!

Yeah, the valley is the area down the big hill from OCC. If you go down the hill, you'll come to a light with a blockbuster. Turn left at the light, I think that's Salina. The vet office is right there, it's a white building with a blue awning on the front. They're a small vet office, but the vet was good with Everest when she was there.

I had the same problem finding a job, applied all over, did those job agency things, even tried applying online. The problem I had is the jobs either wanted years of experience (and as a college grad, I didn't really have that), or I was "overqualified". I was also looking for something related to my college major (geology), so that made it harder. But then I found a job in the classifieds section of the paper for a lab tech, got that job (part time lab tech) and after almost a year, found another listing in the paper for a job at an environmental engineering firm, interviewed, and got the position there. It's hard, took me over a year of applying, interviewing, and being turned down, but I finally found one (and luckily in my field of study). My fiance is havign the same problem, he tries to find something new, and is either overqualified or not the right person... He even tried going back to school and start over in a new major, but he has to take more liberal arts courses before the school will accept him. So he's staying with his job for now, possibly going to take a class or 2 each semester and then try reapplying, unless he finds a different job in his field (machining and plastics engineering).

So good luck with the job hunt!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
