Need to Vent & Hope someone can help!!!

Isn't it weird how people think that reptiles cannot feel pain or hunger? That neglecting them is OK? But if a dog or a cat is mistreated, the people are fined or in come cases, face some jail time. I love my beardies just as much as people love their dogs. They mean just as much to me. It would be nice to see retpiles and other pets protected by law...

It is just plain ignorance on their part to think they can't feel pain.....also they just don't care because they are evil!!!

I am REALLY upset now, I thought we were going to get the little guy this week and I have been preparing.....well, I just got an e-mail from the sheriff that he was stolen from the pet store on Saturday!!! He was supposedly going to the vet today......this makes NO sense as I was told he was given back to the breeder so I contacted the sheriff to find out who the breeder was since the pet store wouldn't tell me. I told him that even though it goes against principle to pay someone who neglects and abuses, I would do so to save that beardie! He was going to get the information so I could buy the little guy.....I even had a friend call the store last week as she was going to go in and buy him to surprise me and they said they only had a female.....how in the hell can you "steal" a beardie from a pet store???? OMG I am so worried about him!!!

Well, hopefully the sheriff can help you find him to get him into your care. Did you friend get the female that was in the pet shop? Did you get another set up for the male? HOpefully it all works out for you. Let me know.

The last time I went to get crickets, the little male beardie was still there, but I really have no place to put him and can't afford another set up. I always pay for 6 Power Suns, so it's just not to be. They put down the price to buy him, too, but it's just not to be. I'll see if he's still there next time I go in. Wish there was a corner I could pop him into, but I'm seriously out of room

Personally, I think it's just a little too convenient that he was "stolen". I don't buy it for a minute!!! No, the female is still there for sale. I have three males and everyone gets along fabulously in the Drake Lizard World....I am afraid bringing a female in could really upset the calm, friendly, sharing environment we have here. She was taken to a vet (though I have not found anyone in the area who is aware of that vet being a reptile vet) and has UVB now supposedly (I am not allowed in there to check) so hopefully she will be OK. He si the one i was so worried about!!!
Quite convenient that he was to go to the vet today and was stolen on Saturday, don't ya think???? Also funny that he was supposed to have been sent back to the breeder but was now back at the store????? The sheriff is a smart man and it does not take rocket science to see they are lying but I will be truly shocked if anything comes of it......my faith in many people has totally deflated....

Alot of people abuse reptiles, why I don't know, it' makes me sick. Hopefully the sherriff can track down the little guy and get him to you, you'd sure take care of him. I have 3 rescues out of the 5 I have, I've had others but with one thing or another I've lost 4 of my girls. When Sweetie passed away last Dec/11 from pneumonia & too much egg laying (low blood calcium, she was so sick), I put my foot down and now take in only males. So that's how I found Gabriel, he's 2 and was dehydrated, skinny and full of parasites when I found him in the pet shop I got to. He'd just been abandoned to the shop, and I'd just gotten a large tax return, so it was meant to be. He was 280g when I got him and very feeble, he's 500g now and my beardie with the most energy and always into something!

Hi Deb. I am happy for your story and all the others on here of people who open their hearts, homes and wallets to rescues. My story does not have a happy ending.....they say the breeder brought him back so they could take him to the vet and someone stole him from the pet store. I don't believe it for one second....I have been talking to folks who do dog rescue and apparently, that is a common excuse if the dog does or they put it down themselves to avoid prosecution....I am heartsick over it!!!! His eyes will haunt me forever!!!!

Then, to add salt to the wound...this store had a phone threat sent to me saying I was facing a restraining order and possible criminal charges!!! I have NEVER been in any trouble in my life!!! I did not break any law!!! I offered to help them make it right and then when they chose to ignore that, I contacted the authorities. Plain and simple. I certainly did NOT steal any dragon and I don't believe it was stolen to begin with!!!

I love the way people hurt an animal and then try to turn it on the person who is trying to help the animal. I will not give up helping and making changes!!! We need laws that have better protection for reptiles and all other small animals!!!!! That is my next endeavor and you can rest assured, I will continue to try to correct wrongs I come across!

This pet store could have just put up the lights and upped the temps and started feeding properly and it would all be a done deal.....but NO!!! They didn't want to invest $$$$ in the lizards.....just make a quick buck off them!!!! Well, I am NOT going to shut up. Free speech is still allowed in this country and I am only telling the truth!!!

Did you tape the message & get it to the Sherrifff, as that's plain harrassement & they can be prosecuted, but you at least have to make a report to protect youself, so promise you'll do at least that much. They sound like nasty folk.

Ok on to the next. I bow to your courage and integrity. Unfortunately many people are like this in the world. They become afraid of the laws that they know they are breaking and when someone points it out decides to make lawsuits. There are many people who believe that just because animals are not as intelligent, they simply can not have the same emotions as humans. My baby Fafnir proves me otherwise. I can tell if he is bored, happy, sad, etc. If I lived there I would fight through hell to find out what exactly happened to that guy.

This is one of the most bizzare stories I have ever heard about a beardie and a pet store. Clearly they did not want to pay a vet bill. I have heard of stores that are reimbursed by the breeder if a sick beardie dies, so they would rather let it die than pay a vet bill, but I have never heard of them reporting it stolen. I would really love to know if they filed a report. I really wonder what happened to the poor little beardie. I hope it did not suffer.
Keep us updated. Thanks for speaking up for a little baby who could not speak for himself. I wish every beardie in the world could be loved and spoiled.

Thanks so much jezwolf175 and momswims1. I truly appreciate your kind words. There is nothing I can do for that little guy and it breaks my heart. I wonder where he is and it haunts me....I wish so bad he was here with us. I don't know if he is dead, back at the breeders or truly (though I doubt it highly) stolen from the store.

One of my friends went in there the other day and just looked around...luckily they had no beardies so I wonder if they sold the female. I hope someone with knowledge, compassion and the means to provide the proper husbandry got her!!!! They do have other reptiles there but I know nothing about the proper requirements for their tanks (plus I am banned from the store).

I plan on going to a reptile show and speaking to some folks who do have the knowledge and see if I can get someone to go in there and look around and make a report if things are not right.
This is far from over. God Bless all the people who rescue animals and folks who provide the best for their pets!!!! Thank you all for being YOU!!!

This story has made me so sick to my stomach. I almost got 86'd from Petco a lil while back bc the poor babys were in deplorable conditions, but they weren't that bad! It was a TINY lil cage full of about 7 babies all together, they couldn't have been more than 6 inches long and they were getting fed LARGE crickets, the stick on temp gauge said 75 so I made a HUGE scene about how they need to take better care of their animals and give proper care to them to ensure they have good lives. ugh people make me sick. I don't know how they could even think that its ok to treat an animal that way ugh. unfortunately you did all you could. Atleast now the sheriffs office is aware of them treating their dragons poorly...
