Tonight after work I stopped at a locally owned pet store. They are very nice there and I have bought crickets there on occasion while waiting for our on-line cricket orders to arrive and I've bought stuff for my dog and fish food. Anyway, I was talking to the woman working there and she said she too had beardies.

She said they had two for sale there. I went over and looked at them and could not believe what I saw!!!! Neither had any type of UVB at all!!!!! They had red heat light bulbs and NO other lighting!!!!! They had those cheap peel and stick temperature strips instead of accurate digital thermometers. The strip showed it was only 80 degrees in there!!! No hot and cold sides, the light was right in the middle!

The male is missing the majority of his toes and he looks like he may be suffering from some fungus on his front feet. I held him for a while and he just clung to me.....it broke my heart in half to not take him with me but I did not have the $60.00 they were asking for him nor the money to get him all the medical help he probably needs.

The female's cage was the same terrible set-up. She was so thin that she had absolutely NO belly whatsoever, it was sunken in and she was completely malnourished!!!! There were plenty of dead crickets in her cage but with no heat to bask in and digest her food, she is not eating!

I came unglued!!!! I asked the woman why there was no UVB and why there were not basking lights and why there was no adequate thermometer. I asked how in the hell a pet shop could sell bearded dragons when they were obviously sick and they obviously did not know how to take care of them!!!! I also asked her what kind of set-up she had at home and why she didn't make sure her boss was made aware of the mistreatment they were suffering! I was starting to cry I was so damn mad!!!!!! She started to cry too and told me he only feeds them zucchini and she uses her own money to buy other greens for them and she had mentioned the UVB but he didn't do anything. She said maybe he would listen to someone else.

I left him a note telling him they were going to DIE if he didn't get them some Repti-sun10 bulbs and basking lights immediately!!! I wrote him the basking should be around 100 degrees and the cool side in the low 80's. I said I wanted him to call me to discuss their care and let him know I would be happy to teach him how to take care of beardies and to create a care sheet for him to pass out to his customers. If I do not hear from him by tomorrow, I will go back. If the changes have not been made and/or he seems at all reluctant to make them, I will be writing letters to the local papers, calling the Department of Agriculture and the Animal Control and naming his store on my FaceBook. I already posted about it on there without naming him and the response was huge within a few minutes. I don't want to hurt a small local business but I am much more concerned about the cruelty these beardies are suffering!!! As I told the woman, it was like they were in a concentration camp for reptiles because they were so malnourished and the temperatures were far too cold for them to live, let alone thrive!!!

The hardest thing I ever had to do was walk out of there without buying those two sweet innocent babies!!!! I told her I didn't even think it was legal for him to sell a beardie that was so unhealthy that it was missing so many of it's toes on each foot!!!! They had huge stress lines on their bellies too!!!! I did not have the $60 he was asking for one and the $70 he was asking for the other.

We just were given a rescue baby in November at Pet Smart. He had been part of a clutch they received that had fungus. All had died but two. An employee was taking one and she said they had another that was missing most of his foot from having to have it removed to save his life. I agreed to take him site unseen as they were going to have to dispose of him otherwise!!!! I already had two at home and one is a Craigslist rescue that has MBD and requires a lot of care but I could not say no!

When she brought him out he was in an old algae stained tiny fish tank and tried to bite me when I picked him up. I just cuddled and comforted him. I realized he had never been held except by the vet who amputated his foot and was probably terrified. It just made me so sad!!! I promised him he now had a mommy who would love and cherish him forever.

It was hard for the first month when I had to keep them completely separated and sterilize everything constantly to protect my other two babies and to remember to wash my hands constantly between holding each of them. Now, we are all one big happy family!!! :) I just wish I had the time, money and space to add those other two to our home!!!!! But, that is not a possibility for me :( I am hoping there is one of you who lives in mid-Michigan and can add these two desperate babies into your home!!!!

I convinced a Pet Supplies Plus to get rid of the sand in their beardie tank and to add UVB lighting last year. I actually helped them make all the changes while I was there. I try to educate everyone who sells or owns beardies that has not taken the time to learn about these wonderful creatures!!! It is my life mission (one of them anyway!!!!) and I certainly hope and pray I can give you a positive update to this story!!!! Maybe one of YOU can help make that happen by adopting these two sweet, care-starved loving babies!!!!

I know the frustration of pet shops who just won't take care of beardies, my husband worked in one in 2008 and that's how we ended up with 2 babies ourselves. I just don't get why you'd take on reptiles and then not take care of them, what would be the point? But they don't have the same thinking as we do. I'm so glad you took in the last 2 & gave them forever homes, I have 5 adult males in a 1 bedroom apt or I'd take in the little guy that got left at the pet shop where I go. His head was badly burned but it's healing now, he was just left at the pet shop and he's been there for a month. Every time I go there I hold him for at least 1/2 hr and they don't mind, they know I love dragons & if I had the room & $ he'd have a good home. He's at least got good lighting and food and is well cared for, but it breaks my heart that I can't bring him home, I just don't have any more room, I have 2 geckos, too.

So I hope someone sees this and is able to take those 2 dragons in but please do report this shop owner as he deserves to be reported for animal abuse. Some shop owners just get away with abuse all the time, I hear about it constantly on this site.

Good luck with your next visit there and it's ok to vent here, that's a reason why we're here, too.
Take care
Deb

Thanks Deb! How wonderful that little guy has you to love him!!!! I bet he looks forward to your visits and it helps him stay on the road to recovery because he knows he is loved!!!

I did not sleep all night thinking about that poor little guy clinging to me and looking at me with those eyes...he fought so hard to stay on my hand and not go back into that tank. :( My heart is broken over this!!! I have about 1500 friends on FaceBook so the word is definitely getting out about these guys needing help!!! This morning I decided to add what I could to help someone considering adopting them.....I offered to give them a fully equipped tank. By fully equipped, I mean it has the background paper, the tiled floor, the screen cover that my husband modified so the hot side has tin on it and the holes are cut for the lights and the rest of the top lifts up on hinges, the lights, the cave and even a feeding dish.

We just spent hundreds of dollars building an elaborate 8 foot long tank for two of ours, there is a wall in the middle with a mouse hole door that we can close off with a lever below, so they can run back and forth to each other's sides to visit (and they do! they are best friends and though they are both males, they have always got along well and would be upset if we closed them off from each other). They each have their own side that has a cave, branches, rocks, hammock, climbing shelves and a burlap wall to climb. We went from Reti-sun 10 tubes, basking lights and ceramic heaters to the Mercury Vapor bulbs. Wow what a nice change in the electric bill!!!! I had planned to sell their two tanks on Craigs List to recoup some money but, if I can find a loving soul to take one of both of these guys, I will gladly eat the $150 or $200 I could get for selling them.

I did not hear back from the pet store so I called them and offered to come in and help them set up the tanks properly and prepare a care sheet for them to follow and give to people who bought the dragons. She replied "I already work 43 hours per week and I am stretched thin, I don't have time to learn about them and care for them. People who buy and own pets should do the research on them".

I replied "Um, don't YOU own them now???" I asked her how they could sell reptiles and not have UVB lighting for sale. She said "We used to carry it but no one bought it and it is expensive". I replied "Well, maybe if YOU used it and stressed the NECESSITY of it, people would buy it. How can you be so irresponsible and NOT have it...that is ABUSE and NEGLECT!!! People come to pet stores to get advice about pets...ESPECIALLY if you are SELLING them".

She said the owner would call me back. He did not. So, I called the MI Dept of Agriculture and spoke to the woman in charge of that department. She actually was a former Herp Vet and was quite appalled at the lack of proper husbandry and said under MI Penal Code they were required to provide adequate housing, including vet care for any animal they were selling. She told me to call local law enforcement so I called our sheriff and told him the details. He knows my husband and I pretty well and has met our beardies and knows I have spent hundreds of hours doing research on beardies and that they are my babies and I certainly have enough experience and knowledge to know neglect when I see it!!!!!

My husband had said we could rescue one of them and I had someone take me up on my offer of the free tank and help and guidance to take the other one. He is a good friend of ours and would be an awesome beardie owner. I have not heard back yet as to what happened.

Were you able to get the two of them out of there? Or were you waiting to hear back from the Sheriff? I hope they're both ok. That woman you talked to was the sales lady, right? Well, she's not ultimitely responsible for those dragons, the owner is and I hope he gets a huge fine and is forced to get those dragons to the vet and then to good homes, hopefully to you and the person you mentioned who was interested. You have a big heart and I feel the same way about my dragons as you do about yours, so I'm glad you were able to do what you did.

Sheriff just informed me that the male was sent back to the breeder (now I am trying to find out how to contact her, she will probably dispose of him and I want to save him!!!!!) and that there is a vet coming to check on the female. He suggested to them that it would probably be a good idea for them not to carry bearded dragons. I had sent him a very detailed e-mail covering the care of dragons and he had forwarded it to the store. At least they have the info on proper care and know that they are being watched!!!!

They have several other kinds of lizards there but I have no idea what care they require so I don't know if they are deprived as well :( Hopefully the vet is a real Reptile Vet (unlike the one my dog goes to that saw my dragons and said "oh, you have Iguanas?"...and he was SERIOUS!!!! That is why I drive an hour away to take my babies to a good reptile vet!!!) and will look over all the reptiles and their husbandry.

Please cross your fingers that I can get that little guy from that breeder!!! His eyes haunt me.....

Fingers and toes are crossed and I'm sending good wishes that you find that male. Don't know why they'd send him to the breeder when you can take him in yourself. And hopefully that owner takes care of his reptiles in the future. You did what you could :D

The sheriff said that they will not give me the name of the breeder and they asked him to ask me not to come in their store again. LOL Like I would ever shop in that place again!!! If the only way they will take care of their pets is by force, why would I shop there????
I have never been asked to not come into a business in my life but hey, I wear it as a badge of Integrity for standing up for the Beardies!!!

They had a vet come in to look at the female and she is going to be OK. She has been on UVB and higher temps since Thursday night (the girl I first talked to found a UVB on the frogs and moved it to her tank). The male was the one I am really worried about but hey, at least the female is safe now from my intervention and they probably won't carry them any longer. Mission 1/2 way accomplished!!!

Glad to hear that your intervention was positive for the female. As for the sheriff, why won't he give you the name of the breeder, if you're interested in homing the male? Oh well, at least you did your bit and it worked. And as if you'd ever put your foot in that petshop again. They should have been fined for cruelty to animals, too.

Last time I was there he was doing fine, I really wanted to just put him in my coat & escape, but still, no place to put him at home. I can't even divide a tank to make him room, all of my adults are in 40 gallon breeders, so they need all their space. Rubio's in a 75 gallon tank but he uses every inch of it, he's so big. I have to get back on the weekend, so will see if he's still there. He is such a cutiepie, red brick with black sidebars, very unusual colouring. I can't see myself without the 5 I have, though, sigh. What can you do?

We had a similar situation in a pet store here where I live. We finally had enough and talked them into selling us a very emaciated little beardie with most toes missing from bites. He sold it to us for $8. We invested into her care, vet, etc, and now that little beardie is 8 months old, fat as can be, happy as a lark, and so adorable. She was a lot of work in the beginning, but the joy she brings us is unmeasurable. She was so dirty and cold when we got her that we could not tell much about her color, but now, she has a coral colored beard, has greens, gold and other colors. She is so stinking cute.
To all the rescuers out there who have fallen in love with a skinny, neglected beardie....Let's keep on! Who cares if those store owners get angry with us? They make me furious.

If he is still there, give him a hug from me too!!! :)
@Momswims1, I am so happy you were able to take that little one home and give her an awesome life!!!
Sunday, I wrapped my little Pumpkin in a plush wash cloth with hand warmers between the layers, put him in the pocket of my purse and zipped him in there to stay warm (he loves to be in hiding places so he really enjoys being in there). I took him to the Pet Smart store that gave him to me in November. They were so happy to see how much he had grown and how well he was doing. They really take good care of their pets there and I appreciate how they won't sell a pet that has had health issues and instead find good homes for them to be adopted out to.
I want to start working on getting the legislature to introduce a bill that protects ALL animals, including reptiles (not just cats and dogs)and requires sellers and breeders to have knowledge on what they are doing and to provide correct, thorough care sheets and guidance to buyers. Also, they should be required, at the very least, to be using and selling UVB lighting!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
