So we just bought a new enclosure that is nice and cost a lot but has very poor design for basking and was misleading by pics. The enclosure is 48Lx24W18H. The basking area comes about 8in into the enclosure for the purpose of stacking. It does not matter what you place there for Lazarus to lay on it gets very hot! Even a log. We are going to try and raise up the dome see if that helps but already having heating issues with a 100w light so constantly have the CHE on as well so worried won't give off enough heat. Given that the cage is made of polyethylene it may be difficult to cut it out.

The way you said it is sorta ambiguous, so I am just assuming you mean that the light is getting to hot.
If that's the case, just get a dimmer switch. You can get one from any department store like home depot or lowes.

Sorry, no its anything that's under the light. I'll post some pics so it can make more sense. And the air temperature right at the basking spot is about 94-97

I'm sorry if a similar post shows, my last response isn't showing up. Right now temp is on the low side 92 (now) but we have been opening the enclosure a lot to try different basking spot decor that hopefully doesn't get hot to the touch. We had good temps earlier. The enclosure does take some time to warm up because of the size I'm guessing. The real issue is anything we've put there for her gets too hot for her to lay on

Looks like the probe is taped to the back wall...if you're trying to achieve high basking temps, you'll need to lay the probe flat on the basking surface and leave it there for about an hour or so. Another option is a IR temp gun (cheap off of amazon).

Not sure if this helps, not sure the exact issue you're running into still

I apologize I must not be explaining correctly.
Any suggestions on what can be placed under the basking area that will not get hot to the touch?

Are you saying that the enclosure is 18 inches high with a built in heat lamp holder that results in the end of the basking bulb being 8 inches away from the basking spot causing it to be too hot? If you cannot raise the basking light further away from the basking spot you will have to switch to a lower watt bulb. You can use an infrared heat temp gun to measure the exact temp. (if it's a young dragon the basking spot temp should not be over 110 deg.) A 18 inch high enclosure doesn't give you enough height for branches to climb on. You can use a flat porcelain or granite tile from Lowe's for the basking spot. What are you using for the UVB source and how is it mounted?

Can you post pictures of the front and top so we can see the complete set up? What are your basking area temps, middle area temps and cool end temps?

We appreciate everyone's help and suggestions. Had to play with the wattage and with the IR gun found it was just too hot right there. It's definitely nice to have a place to go and get an answer to any questions that arise. So once again thank you!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
