I would say you could do an initial trimming, and then let him keep grooming them on the slate. What I do, is get a small dog/cat nail clipper (the one that looks like a ring with a guillotine thing that clips it). Get a flashlight or a desk lamp, and examine their nails. They have something called a 'quick' which is the vein, and if you clip that, they could bleed a lot and it's painful. So under a light, It'll basically be a glowing red vein that stops like halfway down the nail. So be sure to give yourself a lot of leeway space from the quick when you do this. It'd be like clipping off the fleshy part under your nail :shock: So just be careful when you do it. Or at least just clip or file off the needle-sharp tip they have and not worry about getting too close. Whatever you're comfortable with.
I clip mine pretty often. I hate getting scratches all over my hand when I handle them. :roll:
