Ok i brought my 2 dragons to the only vet that sees them in my area (100 mile radius) and i dont know what antibiotics he them them but they both have URI. I really need to know what i can ask the vet for to make sure they are getting the right meds. Also really need some ideas about the best way to medicate (vet gave broken up pills I have to crush) thats the least traumatic for my male dragon who is currently either getting ready to brumate or is dying... Pretty sure it brumating, he stoped eating and sleeps most of the time on the cool side of his tank. He seems to be thin to me but I dont know I dont have a way to weight him, and Rose seems to be very round and fat, getting fatter and shes in a semi brumation, barly eats unless i put it in her mouth (still spits out most) when she gapes. Its kinda cute now when i walk near her tank she opens her mouth every time, makes meds easy!
Also how do i heat up there tanks with out hurting them or cooking them in it by making it too hot. I am confused and a bit annoyed at the vet I say I got more helpful information here than from him, he didn't even know how to sex them..... Looked at the bumps on the back legs instead of lifting the tails to see the base underneath GRRRRRrrrrrrr.... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Any info on how to propely deal with this would be greatly appreciated. I ordered Reptaid, Rose takes her meds easy, Thorn is a complete beep head about it, bits and claws and thrashes, has for the most part eaten the plastic end of the syringe to pieces LOL He is also showing a dark grey to black beard ALL the time, as well as strips down his back that were never that dark before.

Tanks 45gal breeders
cool side 78-80 deg
hot side 90-95 deg
basking 103-111 deg
Newspaper on the bottom of tanks
basking light clear bright for reptiles 100 watt
reptisomthing desert reptile uva-uvb bar bulbs inside the tanks
Bathing 2 times a week for at least 15min or until poop

vets diagnosis and treatment

both had calcium deficiencys (have had them about a month now) got liquid calcium shots
both were wormed
both got b12 vit shots

ummm not sure what eles to put so if i missed anything important please ask i want them to get better, she seems to have too much spit in the corners of her mouth when gaping and he kinda squeeks when he head bobs hard. cant hear any sounds when they breath and no popping noises or huffing sounds unless i tick them off LOL then the huff or hiss?

Oh and they get there crushed antibiotic pill once a day about noon mixed with probiotics yogurt out of a plastic syringe (needless) dropper thingy. Also use squash baby food mixed with chicken baby food every other day. they have been on the antibiotic for 4 days no change in behavior other than Thorn getting madder and madder personally I'm waiting for him to bite me.

The only suggestion I have is changing your uvb bulb to either a reptisun 10 tube or the arcadia 12% tube which is now available in the USA. I haven't tried that one but I've heard it's just as good as the reptisun 10 tube.

Also, if they have uri, you need to increase their heat both in the basking/day temps and the nighttime temps to about 80.

Looking at the phemoral pores is a pretty accurate way to sex beardies, so that is something.

I would also change your UVB. Sounds like you have the Zilla or Exo Terra (these are the ones that have desert in the name), and both of these can cause health problems and calcium deficiency. ReptiSUN 10.0 by zoo med or Arcadia d3 12% are the best, and even so both need to be mounted inside the tank with no glass, screen or plastic between the light and the beardie at a distance of between 6-8 inches. Any other way of doing it has high risk for calcium deficiency associated with it.

Good luck.

Thank you all, I'll replace the light as soon as I can, and mention the different med to my vet to see if I can get from him.

Can liquid baytril be given with Reptaid. Or do they make them sick if used together?

No they cant be used together. Baytril is one med that is known to cause complications if used in conjunction with reptaid although it is never advised to combine reptaid with any medicines.

I noticed in your other thread that you're using a stick-on thermometer. Any type of stick-on thermometer can be off as much as 20 degrees so I would recommend that you get a thermometer with a long wire & probe end asap so that you can find out what the temps really are.

Try to make giving the meds as stress-free as possible. Sounds like the male is rather difficult. Are you mixing the crushed antibiotics with a little baby food for them to lick off their noses or are you forcefully putting the crushed antibiotics in their mouths? Are you giving probiotics to help restore the good gut flora that the antibiotics kill off?

mixing anitbiotics with babyfood one day yougert on alternating days. Thank you for the advice used my digital kid them to check basking (all it will do) and it was too hot, ill get a probe asap as well. Thanks for letting me know i can give both meds at same time will start the baytrill first then wait a week and do the reptaid will that be ok?

Rose is an easy to medicate Thorn is a pain, been using an idea i found here to slide my shopping card in first (will NOT lick from nose) and then putting meds in back of mouth slowly he seems to do better with this method.

Make sure you are using SOY yogurt because beardies can't digest any dairy products. Soy yogurt or another probiotic should be given daily while on any type of antibiotic treatment to help prevent stomach upset.

You actually shouldn't squirt anything in the back of their mouths because they can aspirate very easily. It's safer to enter from the side of the mouth and squirt it there.

ok thank you ill use the side of the mouth instead of the back corner. i bought a probiotic called PB8. they are vegetarian and is in capsules i do not know if this is safe for them to take (will have to open caps and mix a little with babyfood) but there is no dairy in it. does anyone know if this is safe for them? I bought it at the health food store its the only stuff i could find with out dairy in it.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
