My wife and i Purchased Beardie from Petamart on 8/25/09. We baught the 20 gal long, knowing we would have to upgrade in a few months, uva & uvb bulbs, carpet water bowls, digi thermometers for each side and hydrometers. They give me a printed care sheet and send us on our way insisting this was 6 weeks old and only give it 2-3 crix a day, so we also baught 30 small crix. We go home set everything up, sterolize the tank and put him in. We made sure to keep the kids from handling for 3 days and gave him 2-3 crix as we were told to. I found this site and many others saying from hatchling to 6 months should have 30-70 crix a day. Petsmart insisted we stay on their regiment of mon, wed, and fri give meal worms and other days crix. Even though we read no meal worms we did. after its first meal of the worms it never ate again, it became verey dark, lithargic and did nothng but sleep. Needless to say that inside of a week we braught it back. One manager told us it was impacted, which we later found out would have been caused by mealies, and another told us that my 3 yr old child gave it a nervous disorder. Never the less they exchanged it and it died that night in their care. The new one developed a breathing problem through the night. It wa breathing through its mouth w/ very large gasps, would hold it in and exhale. Through the night My 7 yr old kept comming in that the Beardie was waking him and you could actually hear it gasping. P.s Temps were about 90 on basking and 79 on the cool side. We went back yet again, left w/ #3 which indeed stopped eating after 2 days also. Thanks to everyone on this site we now knew what was going on. We Seered clear of mealies all together and had tried to increase to 10-12 crix a day. As we realized it wasn't eating we continually tried to feed it, we gave it baths 2x a dayin temps of 90-95 degrees. Finally after a week of no food we tried baby food, chicken to be exact. It worked like a charm. The next day it finally pooped and continued to eat 10+ crix a day. Only one problem, its poop had no consistancy and was all liquid. We thought that the amount of water it consumed in the past week maybe its normal, butthis went on for another week. Everything i read and every one i spoke to said the same thing. "parasites" So i called the vet, who told me i had to bring it in cause the poop was diarhia $45.00, test another $45.00 and if it was then meds @ what ever they cost. Ok, so now i have an animal worth $50. and soon to be cost of 90-120.00 so I called the manager. He asked me why i waited so long to call and that it passed my 2 week period and i replied w/ you told me no more exchanges. He wanted to know what i wanted out of this. We agreed on a refund. I took that money and ran to a local pet store who is also a herp rescue and baught a 12 week old which by the way, was 1/2 the size of what petsmart told me was 6 weeks old. From day 1 this thing ate 20+ crix a day, he just had his first major shed since we have had him(3weeks) and ate over 30 yesterday. He seems to have grown over a full inch in the 3 weeks. I appologize for this long drawn out story, but i want people to be aware of the fact that pet co & petsmart are both mass sales, they flip associates regularly and have no formal knowlege of all the animals that they sell. When i braught back the 3rd dragon I presented the Mgr w/ a fact sheet as printed from here. He advised me that it would take alot more then me to change the way corporate does things, so i would like to prove him wrong and have petco & petsmart both be held accountable for their misguidings. They are not only playing w/ peoples emotions towards the animals, but the animals lives as well.
