Hi guys,

Just got my Megaray MVB and I did not expect the bulb or the dome to be that massive, anyway my tank is 21" high, which i thought would have been high enough to allow a distance of 12" which it doesnt, with thebasking rock being there or whatever im only getting about 10" distance from the bulb so...I was gona go about placing the dome fixture of top of my wooden viv, meaning i would have to cut out a square in the roof of the viv and fix some wire mesh underneath that. Is this the way to go about this? means I would have to buy a circular saw though also any idea why my megaray has blew already? just put it in the 100W dome (its a megaray 100w bulb btw) turned it on, it flickered and died. the packaging did say atleast a 100w fixture so...

I have had that happen to me too! If you got it from Reptile UV just send it back with a copy of your receipt. Get it there before wednesday though cause I believe that is when they process returns.

The Mega-Rays are a serious bulb though. They are big so they do surprise most people on how big they are. I would't use a circular saw to cut your whole though. Your best bet is going to be to go to your local home depot tool rental department. Tell them what you want to do and let them recommend you a tool for the job.

Well im from UK dont think they tool renting unfortunately I could ask anyway what tool they would recommend! I know it was annoying, turned it in just to see how bright it was etc then it died more hassel...im not from the US so shipping will be a pain in the ass too. I guess I should also send back the dome and exchange it for a 200w or something to be sure, either that forget the dome and put the new megaray inside the tank without the dome into a ceramic fitting, argh! in such a prediciment!

also remember that the farther away u put it the less intense the rays are and the megaray dosn't produce that much heat when its in such a height

Do you know anyone with a Zip saw? Or a Jig Saw will work too. The zip saws have a circle attachment that comes with some of them and the blade is a cutting bit that spins. Makes for cutting a circle in about 2 minutes. Instead of using metal wire or hardware cloth, I made wood brackets that allow my dome to drop into my viv about 3 or 4 inches. They are U shaped and one on each side where the edge of the dome sits. Makes it about
12 inches from the basking spot and doesn't look too bad either. I have pics if you need help with ideas. Cheryl

I used a jig saw ,cut a round hole 1 inch diameter larger than the dome fixture ,
Stapled 1/2 inch wire mesh hardware cloth to inside on viv and set fixture in hole on
top of cloth.
Using 1/2 mesh doesn't block the UVB rays.
I have a 2x2x4 crossfire design enclosure .
Basking rock is 14" away from Mega-Ray and holds a Temp of 103 F.
Try http://WWW.PETMOUNTAIN.COM for deep dome fixture.
Got mine for 12.00 bucks here in local stores they are 18.00 to 22.00 bucks

Thanks for the replies folks! Any ideas why my first bulb blew? because i sent it back and got another. The first bulb i put it in my 100w t-rex dome and it just blew. I put this new one in the same dome (thinking i maybe just had a dodgey bulb) and it went on for bout 20s then started flickering, so i unplugged it to prevent it blowing. I then tried it in another socket and worked fine until i turned it off then back on, started messing up. Not sure if its just been the sockets ive been using. Was gona goto my local reptile shop and check out the lucky reptile ceramic sockets (and bring my bulb with me) and see if theyl let me try it out before i buy this socket. Anyone had problems like this? :?

The only problem i had with mine is when you turn it off you have to wait about 15 minutes before it well turn back on. I did not know this untell brainy me read the instructions I allmost took it back.I think i would try a new socket to. Pamela.

Mega-ray flickering
I have had this happen also.
As previous poster stated on MVB bulbs you have to wait about 5 to 15 minutes to allow them to cool down then turn it back on.
Have you tried to find a deep dome fixture?
I have my Mega-ray inside a deep dome fixture and it sits inside the fixture about 2 inches
from the rim.
This may give you the extra 2 inches you need.
Also do you have a Drill?
Another way you can do it is draw a line around your deep dome fixture .
With about a 1/8 to 3 /16 drill drill holes all around the circle then knock the circle
out with hammer. the circle should look like this .......................................
Might look kind of un professional but you have your hole and depending on how tall
you're viv is you would probably would never see it.
This would save you the expense of buying a jig saw....unless you are like me and just have to have more tools
Just my 2 cents worth .
