Hi all,
I am new to the forum and new to owning a Bearded Dragon. It all started when my co-worker offered to me his pet because the family wanted it in a new home where it might get more attention or play time. So I looked into the pet and did some researched and loved the idea. I took him home and he hadn't moved from the spot I put him in since I moved him into the new cage. He came in a much smaller one and I had already set up a bigger one in advance.
I took him to the pet shop for a "look-at" and was told that he was in a bad set of MBD. I have the proper lighting, and I can give him the proper food and supplements, but I have to hand feed and water him because he won't move on his own. He even has periodic spasms where he arcs his back, his head goes up, and his mouth or jaw goes wide open as if he's crying out in pain or something. During this spasm he'll hold this position until he slowly comes down out the shape and then back to his normal laying down position.
His rear legs have no movement, and he can barely lift his upper body up with his front legs. I feel bad for the Dragon but it's not what I signed up for. I was told he was healthy and moved about and did such things a healthy Dragon could do.
I see it that I have three options: Relieve the Dragon's suffering and put it to sleep, care for it until it can care for it's self, or give it back to the original owner and buy a new young Dragon from a pet shop and start over.
Putting it to sleep sounds harsh and as if I don't care just as giving it back to the original owner does but this isn't what I wanted. And I don't know how long it will take until the Dragon gets better. I don't even know if he will get better. He at least won't get any worse but any worse would be death. He can't move himself! That's horrible. That's why I thought maybe I should put him out of his misery but part of me says he deserves a shot. He still eats but only if I hold him and hand feed him like a baby.
Any thoughts or ideas, or opinions?
