Mega Ray Burnt Out Already !!

I have a Mega Ray 160w that we have been using for only 3 months max possibly less and today it wouldnt turn on and has turned like a dark color inside like it burnt out.

From everything i have been reading it says these lights can last1 year to 18 months!

Anyone know what can cause it to burn out so quickly?

I do have a 100w here for back up and thankfully i have found the receipt and box - they should take it back and replace it wouldnt you think?

If you bought it direct from reptileuv.com, then yes they will replace it. I believe their policy is to provide a replacement that will be warrantied for the remainder of the original warranty period. Just send an email to Bob at reptileuv.com and he will look after it for you.

I bought it here in Canada at my local reptile store ... like i said i did find the bill so im sure it wont be a problem ... does nayone know why this would happen?

Did you have the MVB laying straight or at an angle?

We have them hanging on lamp stands so no they are not on an angle ... would being on an angle do damage and make them burn out?

Yes, having them at an angle can damage the filaments causing them to burn out prematurely. Have you been using it completely straight or could you have dropped it? Are you using the right capacity holder for it?

no they would not have been dropped ... they are in deep dome holders is that what you mean?
Actually a few times it was removed from the stand and placed on the floor sideways in the holder when we cleaned out the viv and a couple times at night when we put on a ceramic heat emitter when we had a cold snap for a few days.

I thought maybe it had overheated if not in a deep dome or being used in a holder for a lower wattage capacity, but sounds like that wasn't an issue. Perhaps the bulb was just defective and since you have the receipt, you should be able to exchange it or get a full refund. It certainly shouldn't have burnt out so quickly.

It's possible that you got a defective bulb. When I talked to Bob, he explained that the glass is hand-blown and apparently the rest of the bulb is handled mostly by, um, hand. So, it sounds possible. Check with your store, though. They should be able to replace it, if you are within their warranty.

BTW, how cool of you to be able to buy a MegaRay at the store!

I was told by a store owner that there is no warranty for MegaRay in Canada. Hopefully that is not true and you can get a replacement bulb!! Keep us posted - it would be good to know. I bought a 160W SolarGlo MVB because of that.

The only place I've found that has any MVB other than the Power Sun is Aardvark Pets in Winnipeg. I'm not sure if it's a chain or not so I don't think I'm a huge help. Try to find the reptile specific stores, or a store that breeds or something to see if you can find them there.

There are 2 reptile stores here in Ontario that carry the Mega Rays 100w and 160w.
One is called D&D exotics and the other is Jackies Critters and Things ... they are not chains - they are just privately owned reptile shops.

I will take it back today and see what they say - im sure with the bill there wont be any problem.

regarding reptileuv.com they had horrible service, i ordered a bulb jan 3, and had to call jan 15th to find out where it was only to be told they didnt have any in stock and will have some in a few weeks. Not a choice company to me.

Hello,

Regarding the Megaray 160watt Self Ballast light. We have had trouble with the 160watts, but never the 100watts. I don't know if it is something in the ballast that gets too hot, but we always use a ceramic base dome fixture that supports 500+ watts so our setup was fine.
We only use the 100watts now, & have never had a problem with any of those. I recommend getting the Megaray 100watt instead of the 160watt.
I have always gotten good service from Bobmac. Have you tried calling him?
