Dear Beardies and their Slaves!
My name is Jeroen 35 year old male, but feel free to call me Fraggler which is my alias as an performer and in online gaming, probably be easier too for those who ain't Dutch
Last december i adopted a probably 8 year old male beardie called Mango, who lived at a kiddy farm and educational center for 3 years and sadly was on the brink of death... Lethargic, bad impaction caused by his diet of daily Superworms and oversized locusts who were never gut fed, he didnt eat any leafgreens or veggies but some times he did eat a few tiny pieces of bellpepers and tomatoes which are actually fruits but almost never touched those probably once per 1 or 2 weeks, so I'm sure his diet lead to dehydration and impaction (nearly spoiled to death) he a few times a week he would nible a few pieces of sweet fruits and Mango was his favorite, he also had mouthrot and an abcess on his yaw wich was rotting away due to gingivitis, therefor i decided to change his name too Mangolito Chipito because i associate it less with sweet sugary Mango's that nearly killed him.
In the past i head a collection of snakes and breeded them so i decided too take him too trying too see if i could help him or atleast ease the pain and suffering. it has been rough but Mangolito is healing, i gave him proper uvb lighting arcadia pro t5 12% and ditched the 2 year old coil and bought a Microclimate Evo Connected 3 stat. Bought him proper calcium and multivits from Repashy and Reptivite and didn't dust his fruits like they did, instead his First (gut fed) Dubias only 3 Days a week. Within two weeks his impaction was gone and he started moving again. He didn't touch the leafy greens i got him so i got him Critical Care from Oxbow. his new diet really started to pay off and got more energetic, i started to treat his mouthrot by brushing his teeth daily with Clorhexedine, and sometimes dilluted betadine along the way i learned not to use betadine daily as it dries out the gums, and slowly the thick thready slime returned to more normal conditions. I took him to the vet who on the internet claimed to be a specialist in reptiles which is isnt as it is a protected title and takes another 4 year master study and after that 5 years experience too gain this title in Europe.. he probed him and said it was a female.... while it takes a second too see he's clearly a male by liftinh his tale. he told me nothing had to be done with the abcess as long it didn't grow because i cured his mouthrot succesfully, also he adviced me too stop brushing his teeth daily, instead only twice a weak, i asked too run some bloodwork and make an x-ray and he responded that it wasn't necessary... it felt all weird to me because i have been reading about beardies every day after work till bed too understand beardies and Mangolito's problems, because i know snakes not lizards, but found so much misinformation by these tricky websites who probably are generated by Chatgtp as every paragraph is the same size and big commercial banners are placed inbetween, really stay away from those sites there full of **** and are just out for the ad revenue... The dutch bearded dragon and reptile forums are basically dead atleast not active and the few i spoke with didn't know ****.. than i foud this forum and made my first posts in de beardy er thread.
his mouth got worse after quitting the daily brushing so i found another vet, a young girl who actually did graduate ad a a vet followed up with a mastets degree in reptiles and explained me about the previous one and had no positive words about. She explained she isn't allowed yet to use the title specialist but had been working as a pure reptile vet for 2 years and had loads of experience with beardrd dragons already, the bloodwork and poo samples seemed really well but the x-ray showed his yaw was already that rotten and he had to get surgery asap and sonic cleansing the same week as within a month probably she would've had too remove his entire lower left yaw. surgery a few days later went well, she prescribed him baytrill and pain meds for two weeks, told me too use the Reptivite daily as it contains probiotics, i asked her about the vitamin a exposure but she told not too use it too often in a Healthy bearded dragon but it shouldn't be dangerous for 3 weeks in a when the use of baytrill is ineffetable, she thought me that i should disolve an small ammount in watter and let the unsolvable solids sink and syringe feed him only the yellow water.
The baytrill did make him lethargic and made him eat less, but he almost ate every day so, he survived is a hungry hippo again but still recovering she told me full recovery would take about 1,5 years as he's an coldblooded creature, hes been on two check ups and soon we'll have the third, and his gums are slowly growing back and I'll have too check his mouth often too see if it needs brushing.
he had a rough time all those years but he is moving forwards finally!
His Vivarium is actually too small but didn't have the money as all the other costs of the proper electronics, vit powders, vet bills, and food like critical care, costed me about 3k in Euros, and moved in too a new appartment in February, witch drained my savings but thats fine, i just bought and constructed a pre made Osb3 viv, WxDxH 150x60x80 cm which is 4' 11"x1' 12"x2' 7" i guess? not sure you people talk about inches, feet, foot and gallons which make my European metric brain melt 🫠
I finally shared all these months of frustrion and burning out, I'll post a second thread in the "enclosure" and promise it won't be aslong , but I'd like too ask there whos interested helping out finishing this huge enclosure, sealing electronics and decorate it into a beautiful micro Australia where the little guy, 53 Cm or about 21" has the room and elevations hideouts etc to explore and be Happy!!!
I hope my English isn't too harsh for you all xD, and thanks for reaching the end!
