Hi, I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I was wondering if a male bearded dragon prefers a female human (like with dogs, and birds). Or if a female bearded dragon prefers a male human. Just wondering, because I'm getting a bearded when I get my taxes. I know it's hard to tell what sex a juvenille is, but I also haven't desided if I want a baby or adult. I'm leaning toward baby. But still haven't desided. Thank You.

You should get a baby! They are a bit harder to care for but you will be able to watch him/her grow and be there for your pet from the start! Extra bonding time! As for what gender likes what, im not too sure on that. It seem that every beardie just has a different personality no matter what gender.

That's a good question - and I have no idea. I'd like to say that bearded dragons prefers anyone (regardless of gender) that loves it, feeds it, cares for it, etc. But if you're looking for a more scientific approach I'm curious to what the answer is too. At the moment, I'm not sure if any studies have been done. Good luck!

While wonderful creatures, dragons are reptiles and thus have a very primitive brain. While we like to project our feelings on animals, reptiles do not form the kinds of bonds with us that a dog would. As long as you give them food, interaction and a proper environment they will thrive and give you some great enjoyment.

A baby dragon is wonderful, but be aware they can eat upwards of 100 or more live feeders per day, that's over 3,000 live feeders a month. When we got Spike, he ate us out of house and home, often eating 120 lobster roaches a day. If we were going to do it again, I would either get a young adult or start a dubia roach colony at least 6 months before getting a baby so we would have "free" feeders.

You pay more for an adult up front, but the cost of not buying 25,000 feeders over 8 months offsets the price difference.

I have to disagree! If you have spent enough time with bearded dragons, in general, they are much smarter than most people give them credit for. They do bond quite well, & can bond more with one person than another. Though as mentioned, they will bond with either caregiver if you allow them to.
If you do not interact with him or her, & spend much time with him, then the bonding wont really take place much if at all. That is totally each person's choice. I have chosen to take the extra effort in dropper training all of our dragons, potty trained, & they all go to sleep on us, too. They all have personalities as well that are all different.
They have figured out ways to manipulate us to get their way, like pouting especially. So while they may be limited in cognitive thinking, they still have fairly high brain functions & are quite capable of learning.
As to whether or not a male bonds with a female more or vice versa, that is really a question that can have various answers. Some may prefer the opposite sex, or seem to but are still perfectly content with the same sex. There really is no rhyme or reason to it.
