Hi Everyone,
I made some changes to my beardie's terrarium. Just took this a few mins ago before his "lights" came on since that basking bulb gets super hot. Take a look and see if it looks right to you. I took the screen off because it was pretty much making burn marks from the basking bulb being too hot.

Also now since screen blocks most of the UVB he will be able to get more of it.

Thanks!

Thanks! LOL
Yeah, no other animals but just him. He is my spoiled dragon :D
I wanted to get him a friend or a mate but i was hearing they cant really be in the same terrarium. :x

Only other concern about this now is well I've heard that some basking bulbs explode... which i have no idea why or what would cause them to explode other than using improper lamps or something. That's my only other concern now he is totally exposed and if that bulb breaks I'm afraid that the glass will get all over the place. Whereas having the screen its kind of a shield protector.

Should i not worry about it?

That looks great! I would move the thermometer probes so one is on the branch under the basking area and maybe put the second one on top of that rock slab on the cool side. That will give you better surface readings. I use zip ties to keep mine anchored but there are plenty of good ways to keep them in place.

I've kept the top off of my tank for years now and have never worried about exploding lights. I've had them go out but they just burn out. The halogen flood lights I use are pretty heavy/sturdy though and are less likely to break up or explode than the thinner cheap bulbs. Even when I used the ZooMed Repti Basking spot lamps I never had one explode. They would break during travel sometimes but otherwise they'd just burn out and stop working. I don't think it's really a hazard worth putting too much concern into.

Thanks CooperDragon!

I will move the thermometer probes both basking and cooler side one as well.
Clearly have an acrobat dragon

Since the screen top is off and i just saw him do this. Crazy little guy.... he has a lot of energy and i knew something was off when i gave him those many waxworms

If he climbs that screen, he could possible get out. You might need to put the screen back on top or cover the top part of that back screen with something smooth that he can't get his claws in.

I could put the screen back on and leave the heat lamp where it is so it doesnt burn the screen mesh. Isn't it beneficial of having no screen mesh for the UVB or is it really not that much difference having the screen on or off?

Is this ^ true?
Yes, but if you are using a 10.0 t5 ho, you just need to elevate the basking spot a little closer or mount the light under the screen. I achieved this using zip ties.

If i were to elevate his basking spot, i would make his climbing branch steeper so he can get up closer to the UVB lights? Is that correct? Also, can you post a photo of how you achieved with using zip ties? :D

Here's an interesting observation:

1) I put back the screen on my enclosure. As soon as i did this, it got darker all around. Best way to describe it is... sunny day & bright (without screen) vs on a cloudy day (with screen).

2) While the screen was off, he was spending most of his time on the floor or his tile substrate.

3)As soon as i put the screen back on, he immediately climbed up on his branch not directly under his basking light but more on the UVB side of the branch.

Conclusion, i am thinking that having the screen off was a bit too much for him as he had to be towards the bottom of the terrarium vs near the top.

I pay so much to the little details its not even funny. It drives me mad and I'm sure everyone around me

I left the lamp stand where it is lowered it just a bit so its closer to him but its not exactly toughing the screen. Hopefully that helps and does not burn the screen :?

Here's how he sitting on his branch:

Yes, definitely keep the screen on. It only blocks an average 20 percent of the uvb, not a whole lot.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
