Looking for insight on my beardies random eating habits

So my beardie, Ziggy, has done this twice now and I’m am curious if this is just how beardies can be, or if there is something more.

Ziggy normally loves to devour dubia roaches, they are her favorite. Recently, for the 2nd time in just a few months, she will refuse to eat them. She just won’t. She watches then run and just doesn’t care. Where normally she would run at then with her tongue shooting out.

I would be worried if she wasn’t eating eating her salad. Her left salad isn’t fancy, which is how she likes it. It’s mainly collards with bits of kale, arugula and sometimes bok choy. I also throw in basil, cilantro and rosemary a few times a week. She refuses to eat anything that isn’t green. (I have tried so many veggies, she is just picky). Anyway I digress. She won’t eat black soldier larvae, mealworms, butterworms. She never has and I try. She will eat one superworm here or there. The only thing she will eat when she gets like this is hornworms, which my vet agrees is perfectly fine provided they are gut loaded with veggies like collards and bell peppers.

Do beardies just have this randomness about their eating? Or is there something more here I need to investigate? Hopefully she will be back to herself within a week like last time.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

It sounds like she is OK, especially if she's still eating her salad. They tend to go through phases of not being in the mood for a particular food or favoring one thing over another. They usually go back to wanting more of their favorites eventually, but I think they get bored of the same thing sometimes which is understandable. Keep offering her a variety and let her take what she wants. If everything else seems OK she's probably fine.

My guy too! All of a sudden he won’t even look at his roaches!.., never has liked salad but is eating his worms like crazy! So… I decided to try crickets.. although I didn’t want to!… and he is now devouring them! So, from all I’ve gathered, they can go they times if getting tired of on thing. Now I have a whole colony of roaches and no beardie to eat them!.. guess I’ll breed crickets now..maybe he’ll go back and forth cause there are not many more options out there!!

From what I've learned, they do get bored. My guy went his whole first year happy with his crickets, and now he won't touch them. He now prefers to be pampered, so I use tongs to feed him other things. I'm not touching bugs.

That's why, even though he doesn't show interest in fruits and veggies, I still offer them. I think the only time to be really concerned is when they won't eat anything at all.

Thanks. I am definitely still learning her habits. She isn’t even a year old yet and has changed so much lol. Thankfully she is a wonderful salad eater and she finally wanted roaches again today after spending a week wanting nothing exempt hornworms. Her crazy personality makes me love her even more lol.

I had no idea they would get bored with certain foods. I started a colony of roaches so now I’m up to my eyeballs in them! I’m just hoping one day he’ll get the notion to eat them again! And yes, my guy has no interest in chasing crickets or anything!.. so, he too, gets tong fed! He has truly trained me well!!

Yep! I was buying crickets 1000 at a time, then he went into brumation. When he came back out, I stocked back up and he wouldn't touch the dang things! I had a 20 gallon tank set up for just crickets, and now his picky but just watches them hop around.

You can all try getting some silk worms and some BSFL they are another great staple feeders -- I fed my dragons all of the staple feeders except crickets -- Hiccup never liked crickets from the time he was a baby even tho the breeder was feeding those to him - I switched to dubias and he went for them and is still eating them but in the time frame of when he was 3 months to a year he was eating silk BSFL and the roaches along w/ worms - Blaze never had crickets at all -- worms I tried meal after they got to be a year both dragons did not like those - they really like horn worms and butter worms - Hiccup wasnt keen on the supers at first change in taste buds he will now eat them - so my main diet for them now is dubias supers and horn cant find butterworms - I tried wax worms they wont eat them either just as well they are real fatty -- rotate your staples and see how that goes --

Yeah, I don't buy the same thing twice in a row anymore. Thor loves the silkworm pupa in a can, so I keep a can for backup in case he rejects what I buy him, but he hasn't had crickets since September. BSFL are up next, I love that I don't have to dust them.

lol! I know just how ya feel! These little guys have a mind all of their own. I got some silkworms and put a couple on top his salad and wow!! He actually ate some!… silkworms stick to everything! Lear if he gets a mind set to eat roaches again then I have whole big colony!! Lol

have you tried giving her horn worms? and maybe to encourage her to eat find a safe for them to consume red dust that can go on top of the dubia roaches bearded dragons go crazy over the color red

My guy has done the exact thing. Loved dubias … I even have a colony! All if a sudden no way he was touching one. Went for a week until I tried crickets. He’s been eating them like crazy but now… he’s slowed down on them but would eat as many silkworms as I would give him!.. of course silkworms are rather pricey for a everyday feeder!…may have to just have a little tough love!.. that is if all checks out for him health wise. I know I’m about to have to have a little tough love on my buddy because I can’t afford silkworms like he’s wanting them! He’s already taking my last dollar!… but of course he is more than worth it!!
