Enclosure is finally done. Pictures to come -- need to have some better ambient lighting. Here is some info on the habitat lighting:
I have the following fixtures in place:
Left: 100 watt mega-ray UVB bulb AND 100w exo-terra Intense basking spot (the reason for the intense basking spot is to heat up the hide that Gonzalo often sleeps in. Without the extra spot, the hide doesn't warm up until much later in the day.
Center: Philips 125-Watt clear flood / heat lamp
Right: 90 Watt GE Par 38 flood
The fluorescent fixture houses an Arcadia 46"/54 watt T5 UVB bulb
You can also see an LED strip in the back. There is a similar strip that runs the length of the habitat in the front.
Timing goes like this:
Front LED: 6am - 6pm, 30 minute fade on and off -- in the evening, it fades over 30 minutes to 20% then stays on as a "moonlight" until 9 pm (really, it's so we can admire him during the evening hours - the room he's in is pretty dark).
Rear LED: 7am - 5:30 pm
Left (Megaray/basking spot): 6AM - 12:30 PM. Temps vary from 85-110 in the lit area, UVI varies from ~1.5 at ground level to 8 at the highest point. He's rarely (if ever) at either extreme. He prefers the hanging out on the Mopani (when he's on that side of the habitat) where the UVI ranges from 3.5 - 6.
Center / Right: come on at 6AM, off at 8AM - this initial ON period is to heat up the overall enclosure to ~85 degrees ambient air temp (overnight temp in the winter is 65).
Center: back ON at 9AM - OFF at 4:30 -- this is the area he prefers to hang on in, whether the light is on or off, but definitely a preference when the light is on.
Right: back ON at 2 pm - OFF 7 pm. He doesn't tend to use this platform except when the other basking bulbs are off and this one is on. There are several darker hiding spots in the enclosure (really any time of day, but certainly once the fluorescent fixture goes off) -- I leave this one on a bit longer in the event we feed him a bit later or he simply isn't ready for bed. Usually by 6-6:30 he's deciding where he's going to sleep for the night.
Fluorescent MVB (arcadia): 12 pm - 6pm. This provides a UVI of between 2-5.5 in the areas he tends to bask.
The lighting is meant to somewhat simulate the sun moving from East to West (the habitat is actually, by chance, aligned that way) -- you'll notice that there is a period midday when ALL the lights are on, including the MV-B bulb on the left as well as the fluorescent MVB occupying the center and right. He does have hides he could use -- but I've yet to see him use these during the day -- he will alter how high he is in the habitat, however. I've tried to mix temperatures and UV-B intensity such that at any time of day, he can find a temperature / UV-B combination that suits him. Again, the only "exception" to that is midday, but even then, at ground level, the UVI is minimal.
I hope to post some more pictures in the next several days!
