I think it will be fine. If you want cheaper lighting you can go to PetSmart. I went yesterday and got a light for ten bucks, just make sure to get thermometers and a UVB bulb, or your dragon may get sick.

I check out my local pet smart they didn't have any fixtures nor the bulb size I am looking for and I already have my thermometers picked out. What kind of basking bulb should I get. I have the lamp just not the bulb.

The type I got was All Living Things neodymium basking bulb. It just came with the bulb. I had the lamp already. If you can dont get a colored bulb, it does not have the same UVB vitamins. Hope this helped!

I didn't care for the colored bulbs with my gecko.

So, a little clarification

No basking bulbs (aside from expencive Mercury vapor or metal halides) give UVB radiation. UVB radiation allows creation of vitamin D in the body - it does not transmit any vitamins directly. Basking bulbs give off a very small amount of UVA which can be helpful for bison as dragons can see that part of the spectrum.

Colored bulbs distort vision for them just like for us. They make the world look strange an can throw off their appetite, mood and vision.

Neodymium bulbs have a special coating that reduces the yellow portion of the spectrum. For humans this give a more "sunlike" color but for dragons it could distort colors similar to the colored bulbs.

I use and recomend wide angle halogen flood lamps positioned 12-14+" away. They are the better option for inexpencive lights both color and efficiency wise, and the floodk bulbs give a nice big spread to the hot spot.

What kind of flood bulb would you suggest?

So is my bulb OK?

I use R38 65W Indoor flood lights, they are the big frosted ones. I find these give a more uniform hot spot. Doesn't mean other bulbs won't work tho, I tried about 20 to find the right one for my setup.

Jaycee, it's should be ok for basking, I'm not sure who weird the color looks to them. For UVB do you have a separate bulb? If not the reptisun 10.0 or arcadia 12% tubes are a good choice.

Where did you find the R38 65W I couldn't find any on Home Depot's website.

Meijers, I think. It's a store like Walmart or target.
My only complaint about the bulbs is they are a bit dimm, i'd get more lumens if I could find any.

Edit: I was mistaken these are BR30, they work well. The bigger the r or br value the bigger the "spot" of light is.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
